single foot or regular

Hi all,
As I get ready buy materials for the rod rebuild, am I better off with single foot or double foot guides or is it just personal prefernce?
Thanks,
Mike

It depends on what kind of rod you are building or rebuilding. If the rod is lightweight and I want to keep it as light as possible, I will use single foot guides. If I am more concerned about the durability of the rod, I will use double foot guides. An example is using double foot guides on a saltwater rod where a strong fish might pull a knot through the guides.

If I were rebuilding a rod that I was removing guides from, I would almost surely use the same type of guides that were originally on the rod. That way, the new guide wraps would cover up any surface marring of the blank when the old guides were removed.

Thanks Ted. This is an old South Bend that I got for $5 at an antique shop. So, I’ll put about $50 or 60 in. But I’ll have fun and learn new things. Now, a second question - the rod has fewer guides than the “recommended”. Do I use same number or go with what is mentioned in books?
Thanks all,
Mike

Place the “recommended” number of guides, based upon modern rod charts. A primary problem with many older, and cheaper rods, was/is the use of too few guides. Most of those rods will cast sooo much better with more guides and correctly sized guides…

Thanks Bowfin, makes sense to me. I appreciate the input.
