i have a pet snake and she shedds her skin every few weeks and i was wondering if there are any flies that incorporate snake skins or if you have any ideas for a snake skin fly. i imagine it would be for a fish imitation. there is a problem though. it is pretty dry so its not very flexible. but i have a lot so i was wondering if anyones got any ideas?
I will watch this thread closely, as I have 6 pet snakes myself. I have never thought about using their shed skins. John
Make hat bands 8)
Wing material?
im sure you could make cool caddis and stonefly wings 8)
six pet snakes?
why so many?
are they snuggly good pets?
I have kept snakes as pets for over 47 years now. I just like them. I have 6 different kinds. My six include an Eastern Hog Nose, an Hondurin Tangerine Milk Snake, a Nelsons Albino, a chocolate California King an Albino Corn Snake and a Regular Corn Snake. All are kept in their own Tanks securely Locked. None are poisoness. John
Not snuggly pets but very interesting.
John, please forgive me…[I did the sme to FG]…
“My sex include an Eastern Hog Nose, an Hondurin Tangerine Milk Snake, a Nelsons Albino, a chocolate California King an Albino Milk Snake and a Regular Milk Snake.”
Really?
Just a few bad typo’s sorry about that. lol John
Back to serious…are snake skins durable or fragile?
They are fairly fragile. John
i have an okatee corn snake myself. the wing material is a good idea. though i dont think it would be very durable. im wondering about maybe sliding some snake skin over the body like mylar for a zonker type body…
Maybe fish hate snakes…gotta ask them that sometime
heres something to think about.
doesnt the snake skin have an odor that fish would recognize as snake because of the ones that swim in the water and try to catch them and eat them?
so if we used it for a streamer body the fish might come up to it, but then turn away, because they smelt the snake odor?
something i’ve been thinking about.
flyandtie …I thought that’s what I said???
yes you did.
but i was saying the scent of the snake skin might turn them off/make them refuse.
HHHHmmmm…I didn’t think I limited myself to a specific why?
alright…i would delete my post now if i could.
i dont think the scent would be a problem after the first few casts because it would probably wash off. i just tried my hand at a snake skin minnow and the skin was fairly easy to use but i dont think it would stand up to well against a fishes teeth, more or less multiple agressive strikes. i have no idea if itll work but for the minnow i used a size 4 aberdeen, a marabou tail, wrapped some wire around the shank for weight, and used the white cord that comes inside mylar to wrap around to give it bulk. i wrapped a rectangular cut peice of snake skin hot dog style and tied it down at the back with white and the front with red thread. i put a little olive marabou on top, some rhinestone eyes (for eyes) and colored a stripe of purple permanent marker down each side for *purtyness
so yeah thats a thought. im hoping to try it on the water soon. keep the ideas coming!
what about a snake skin caddis!
tie in your hackle as usual, then tie in a strip of snake skin and wrap forward, then wrap forward hackle, cut a wing shape out of snake skin and tie it in. then put some elk hair over it to add visiblility and VOILA!
would try it myself, but i dont have snakeskin.
