Setting the Drag

How do you set the drag on a single action fly reel. i kno theres a lil switch u push in and that makes the reel come off in two pieces, then theres a triangle pawl inside…but i dont kno what to do w/ it… :?

What is the reel’s make/model?

It sounds like you may have a simple click pawl reel that can not be adjust as a drag. If that is the case, then you have to palm the spool to provide drag.

yea…i think thats the case. but the reel is a Pflueger 1094.

but if the drag isnt adjustable, thats odd because it is VERY easy to take line off :? :?: :?

From the Pfleuger website:

How does the drag system work?

Model 1094 - Single Action fly reel

Model 1094 has the simplest drag system: It consist of a click drag and rim control. To turn off the drag and use only rim (hand) control go back to “Turn off the clicker.”

If the drag is so loose that the spool overruns easily (leading to backlashes) it may be defective, I’d return the reel. Or buy a better one.

thats what i thought based on the manual. it told me how to turn it on and off, but not adjust it. so i guess i cant tighten it huh :? o well. its not extremely loose, its just easy to pull line off. :expressionless:

A click drag should be loose enough to allow you to pull line off w/o much resistance. But if you ( or a fish  ) pull it off really fast , and the spool starts to turn faster than you are taking line, it will “overspool” resulting in snarls, rats nests and bad words, then the clicker is not doing its job. The drag for fighting fish is your fingers on the palming rim. IMHO a palming rim is a wonderful drag since it allows you a simple variable drag which can be modified to suit conditions such as amt. of line out, strength of water flow, etc.
