Sand Sharks {Dog fish}

All this talk about fishing for sharks has gotten me wondering. Has any one ever found a way to target dog fish with a fly rod and fly. Used to have lots of fun catching them as a young boy on my salmon rod with bait fish and I got to thinking after all this talk about sharks that it would be a grand old time to take the boat out and chase sand sharks with the flyrod in between the good Salmon fishing tides.

Check the regs in your area. In New England (I believe) they are currently a protected species and targeting them is not allowed.

I’ve only caught one, that was at Point No Point, just before dark on an incoming tide.
We were fishing for chinook, which hang more toward the bottom, I wasn’t stripping fast enough and the fly sank (to the bottom I think). There were a lot of people on the beach and everyone, including me, thought I had a nice chinook…fought like the dickens.
When I finally got it to the beach, it was about four feet long and it was a sand shark.
It took Castwell’s Marblehead. (In the Fly of the Week Archives.) Make sure you have good pliers to get the hook out, or be a chicken like I was and cut it off - they do have teeth…yes, I let it go.

i think you may be incorrect on that one. if you check out the massachusetts division of marine fisheries website, it says that there is no limit on dogfish and that the season is always open.

they are actually starting to sell it under the name “cape shark”. so if you see it for sale somewhere, then you should know that all you are buying is dogfish.

josko and phatkid248 are both right in New England they are protected but in Washington there is a 15 fish limit.

I was fishing off of Point no Point beach last Saturday. I was fishing fly and my leaders would be all gone if i was not to have switched to conventional.I broke off 6 leaders in two hours of fishing. Our boat must have caught 35 or so dog shark. they put up a good fight and have teeth so use steel tippets. For flies i used a yellow and red Lefty’s deceiver.Good fishing
