Salmon Fly hooks for beginners

I have gotten heavily into the online articles by Ron Lucas Sr. and want to try my hand at some salmon flies…I would like to start with some hooks that I can practice with for flossing, tinsel, etc… (getting some basic chops down)

Does anyone have a suggestion about a cost effective hook to begin with and use for practice…size suggestions would be good too

Thanks in advance

For my fishing flies I really like Alec Jakson Spey Hooks made by Daiichi. They have an elegant curve to the shank and are an attractive hook.

You could also check out the Partridge Bartleet hooks. Very pretty hooks as well.

Were you wanting blind eye hooks for making gut loops or eyed hooks?

Or,

you can take up making your own salmon hooks. Your better half will think you have taken leave of your senses but so what.

I recently got started tying mostly hairwing or steelhead type flies. I too use the Daiichi Alec Jackson 2051 for the more elaborate looking flies. I use a lot more TMC 7999 for the hairwings though. Targus has an equivalent of the 7999 that sell 50 for around $15.

Plunker, you should be made aware that the term “cost effective” is rarely if ever used when discussing Atlantic Salmon fly tying.

No reason you can’t use the same hook over and over again for practice, is there?

for just practice, (NOT DISPLAY PURPOSES) just take any hook with the shape you like and cut off the eye. then use a dremel to taper the shank where the eye used to be. this would be HIGHLY recommended for youre first classics as the good ones go for about $10-$20 for 6 hooks.
