Sage SLT vs Cabela's LST

Aside from the similarity of the initials…Does anyone have a comparison between the Sage SLT vs Cabela’s LST?
Some of the descriptions suggest a similarity.

I own the LST in 4-piece 7wt and can only describe it as …SHWEEEEEEEEEEET! The 25 year warranty’s not too shabby either. Light as a feather, which matters to me for all day fishing for steelhead. Got it with the CSR reel.

One costs way more?

Yep, one of the reasons I’m asking.

Let’s see, SLT =$625, LST = $180

Easy choice for some, difficult for others.

What is the ultimate goal for this purchase?

Regardless of which way you go, some will call you extravagant and others will call you cheap and/or ill-informed. Looks like you have a tough choice.

MY opinion: buy the LST and take a nice mini-vacation with the price difference to break it in . I’m not a good enough caster or fisherman to appreciate a $625 rod. I can buy a boat around here for that kind of money.

UMM isnt the SLT a Med Fast rod and The LST a Fast action rod???

Your kinda comparing apples to oranges, the Slt is comparable to the SLI. The LST is like the z-Axis

Just the kind of stuff I wanted to know…

Actually, I have a Z-Axis[I think that’s what you meant] and a SLT [compliments of folks on this BB offering good deals]…but I “need” another rod…and obviously the LST could be a bargin…so I’m trying to see what to compare it too…I can’t do a test run…

 yea I meant Z-axis, I was probably thinking Xp-Z-axis and it came out x-axis

The Cabela’s LST is manufactured overseas and the Sage SLT is made in Washington? Pretty big difference if you ask me.

I presume you mean the overseas rod is inferior to the domestic rod, so I will ask this question. If it’s inferior, why would a US based retailer (Cabelas in this case) offer an unconditional 25 year warranty on it? Seems to me that if it’s inferior, they should offer 90 days or one year at the most.

PaGuy…or anyone…would the LST be more like the Z-Axis then?

I know I have asked this same question a couple times and never gotten a good answer. I have 2 LSTs, a 3wt and a 5wt and enjoy them very much. I have never even held a Sage, much less cast one, but I can’t see how that $450.00 price difference could make me cast that much better. I don’t know fast from med-fast or slow for that matter, but the LST is a much beter rod than the PT or the 3 Forks rods that I also use sometimes. I also agree that the warranty is a good thing, and because of it, I taught a young girl to cast and fish using the LST instead of the 3 Forks because if she broke it I could get it replaced but not so with the 3 Forks.

I cleaned the grip of a 3 Forks with a terry towel soaked in hot water, some of the filler came out, not much just enough to see. I mentioned it to a guy in the fly shop at Cabela’s in Minn. After he found out I had it in the car he said “go get it”. I did and they replaced the rod. I think Cabela’s stands behind everything they sell.

:?: Duck what weight are you thinking about getting?

Trying to decide between a 6 or 7…

what type of fishing are you going to be doing with it?

I’ve only got a 3wt. LST but i also have a 3wt. Sage XP. In my opinion the LST IS a moderate fast compared to the XP. I like the LST very much and would probably have a difficult time choosing between the two if i hadn’t built the XP myself. I know it’s tough to decide without a side by side comparison but if you’d like to try the 3 weight let me know. Good luck ! Rich

Pa Guy…I saw your post in the sequences thread and almost replied saying I emotionally agree but what “nags” at me is the fact that a particular wt rod is so specifically correct for a given fishery…we might be kidding ourselves…

To address your above question…I pretty much did all of my trout fishing with a 6wt but now use 5wts…used an 8wt for steelhead but sold it since I don’t seem to be steelheading anymore…emotionally though I think I might… so thinking of a 7wt just in case for a sudden trip to the Deschutes…a 7 would get me by and still might be OK for those windy trout days …or throwing big bug times… of course I could upline a 6…

Man, talk about considerations

Hey not to confuse the living crap out of you but… That LST cost about $200 that is in the price rang of alot of rods The Redington RS3 is one (I love mine) The TFO Ticr, TFO Jim Teeny, , Sage FLI.
All fast action rods that will cut throw the wind on those windy days of trout fishing or will be able to fight those steelhead, Sorry to put some more options out there but life is full of choices

I bought a 6wt LST for my cousin as a thank you gift for housing my wife & me for a few days last August (gotta love women who appreciate fly fishing), and if you live anywhere near Grants Pass I could hook you up to try out the rod. Just PM me and I’ll give her a call to make the arrangements. She lives within walking distance of the Rogue, so there’s someplace to actually try it out.
