I was wondering what wade-able fly fishing opportunities there are within an hour of Richmond or (preferably) closer? I’m mainly a trout bum, but also hunt striper and just about any other warm water (bluegill, carp, white-smallmouth-largemouth bass, etc.) My Brother-in-law who just moved there said he saw guys fly fishing a rocky area on the James the other day. What species are in that river?
Any tips are greatly appreciated. I’m planning to be there the week of Thanksgiving.
Within an hour, maybe some east slope SNP streams, an hour and a half and they’re definitely in range. The James is a good smallmouth river , but I don’t know how good it’ll be at Thanksgiving.
Your brother-in-law saw folks at the Pony Pasture section of the James River, I suspect. The James has smallmouth and, in season striped bass as well as largemouth bass and other warm water species.
There are good brook trout streams within an hour of Richmond. I’d suggest park streams between Sperryville and Madison Courthouse on a map.
