Reoccurring problem with line

I purchased a rio weight forward line in Nov. and by Feb. had to chuck it. I kept having to cut the end of my line because of snags, small tears. Thought it might be I was stepping on line (cleats)or getting it caught in bushes. I got a new s.a. xps double tapered line but I notice the line is showing some wear and tear already. Now, I’m thinking it might be caused by how I’m stripping in line, somehow getting it caught in my reel? Has anyone had similar problems? I’ve been trying to watch how I reel in line but never notice anything out of the ordinary.

I also wonder about your guides???

I agree with duckster, check your quides carefully, especially the striper and tip top. Also check you reel for rough edges. I doubt you got 2 “reject” lines Allyn

The suggestion to check your guides is very good - take a Q-Tip and run it around the inside of each one. The white cotton will catch and show you if you have a damaged guide.

Your post says that you had to keep cutting the end of the Rio. Was there a problem with the whole line or just at the leader end? A problem with the tip top or stripper guide would affect the whole portion of the line being used. If it is just the leader end, I would have to say that there is something happening elsewhere. The line being scrapped in the rocks, brush etc.

Always to make sure that the guides are in good shape and the Q-tip trick is a good one.

JC. I think what the article is suggesting I do, I might do. I certainly don’t think it’s the manufacturer’s fault. I forgot to mention the similar snags and rips also show up on friends lines too, on reels they’ve lent me. I guess I owe them new line – there goes that fishing trip I was saving up for. I guess the trick is remembering to keep my arm straight when pulling out line instead of moving off to the side? Thanks

xfc, snags were at the leader end. I’m going to correct based on JC’s article and watch for changes

It’s only the end of the line, Do you have too much backing on the reel? When the line is reeled onto the frame is it rubbing against the frame? Is the line on the reel evenly? Do you feel any restance when reeling the last few yards of line into the reel. That sounds like a possible source of the problem to me.

FF,

I think that the other suggestions are more likely but is there any chance you are letting your backcast drop and you are hitting gravel, rocks, limbs or other hard substances. If I get sloppy and let the backcast drop particular when I’m trying to toss a lot of line, I can chew the first twenty feet of line pretty fast. 8T

You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.

Thanks Jim , Your article probably saved my flylines life . I guess thats why you are the grand poo bah !
I was stripping line wrong and have already started to shred my practice line a bit .

This is one of the best tips/hints etc I have seen in a long time. Thank you!!!

JC,
WOW!!..I actually have been doing something right!! When I went to read your article, I figured I would just be adding another fault to my list of things to correct.
