Redington AS 7/8 Fly Reel Quick Question

I just am getting back into fly fishing from when I was a kid. I didn’t know that much back then, but now I have some nice gear given to me to use. I moved back to Vancouver Island and there’s lots of good places here.
I have a Loomis GL3 rod and I can buy the reel in the title for a good price. The rod is 9’ and made for 6 weight line. Is that reel to much? It is supposed to be able to handle 6-9 weight. Is this reel still useful for my rod or should I look out for the 5/6 reel.
Also, one more quick thing. Should I get a dry fly line and a full sinking line, or get those two plus a spool with a sink tip? And is this rod a good all purpose size for fishing with finesse and when you need a little bit extra?
Thanks, the newbie.

Man, ya gotta give us some idea what you’re going to fish for. And, probably go for the 5/6 reel.

There’s lots of lakes around here, and I want to use a float tube in some for trout. There’s not as many good streams and rivers, but I will fish lakes, rivers, and there’s salwater fishing for coho.
I guess any steelhead stuff in the future would need a stronger rod.
Does a 6 wt. rod have enough finesse for dry fly fishing? I just don’t want spend a crapload. I want the rod to cover all bases until your fishing for bigger catches.

ooops, new info! Big fish, Get the G. Loomis it will fit buch better!t,
The 5/6 is lighht, but get it, The reel shoulh balanse fine with the GL3 rod, kewl.

I would agree with JC, but if money is an issue, the AS 7/8 is not a heavy 7/8 reel and it will work until you are able to afford what you really want. Biggest disadvantage is it will tire you out sooner. Enjoy!

Another option is going with our Crosswater Reel for line weights of 4/5/6. It is a large arbor reel, like the AL, and retails for $39. Perfect for just getting back into it without spending a ton of money. It would be a light reel for you. It weighs in at 5.4oz compared to the AL 7/8 at 8.5oz.

Take a look at the Redington AL before you buy the AS. For my money there is no comparison and I would go the extra expense and buy an AL. The AL is lighter and mechanically superior IMHO. Jim.
