I have just been reading the Dec 2007 edition of ‘Fly Fishing & Fly Tying’.
If any of you can pick up this magazine, I highly recommend it,
obviously carefully chosen articles for the winter fly tying.
In particular an article on a different way to tie Pheasant Tail Nymphs by Alan Bithell.
Donald,
Were those the Sawyer nymphs (tied with copper wire instead of thread)? What a cool article and unique method. I was fortunate to have won a subscription to FF/Fting Journal thru FAOL last year and it’s a very well-put-together publication. My only complaint is that I belive it is bimonthly…or it seems like I am so excited to read through it that once I get the latest issue, it’s easy to read through the entire magazine all at once and I’m left to review it for weeks at a time.
Marty
Marty,
It is a monthly here in the UK. The nymphs were ribbed with copper wire but the actual tie was with thread.
I really like the idea of pale bellied nymphs, and it is a simple method, always better.
There are some other good patterns, the CDC Humpy looks very good.
I was not sure how many people on the other side of the pond read the FF&FT.
Donald,
A little confusion on this side of the pond we also have a mag titled “Flyfishing &Flytying Journal” put out by Amato that is a Quarterly.
Bill
Ah!!!
That explains the confusion, we have a monthly magazine called Fly Fishing & Fly Tying, no Journal.
I know some people in North America read it, I have seen comments about articles on other BBs.
Our FF&FT is publish in Aberfeldy, Scotland, which is on the River Tay, and is recognised throughout the UK and Europe
as one of the best Fly Fishing magazines around.
Of course the fact that it is published in Scotland may have influenced my opinion very slightly .
This is their web-site:-

Have a look at ‘Back Issues’, you will get an idea of the quality of the articles and contributors.
That is one heck of a publication you have there! Apologies for the confusion, we have the FF & FT Journal as stated previously and thought you were referring to the Frank Sawyer nymphs tied with wire as the thread. But glad I made the mistake as I had the chance to check out the link you posted and have it bookmarked for future reference. Thanks Donald, much obliged.
Marty
Minor clarification.
The UK publication is “Fly Fishing and Fly Tying” and IMHO is probably the finest FF publication in the English language. (Don’t know about the others.)
The US publication is “Fly fishing and Tying” and is also an excellent publication.
The UK magazine is a monthly and the US publication is a quarterly.
I subscribed to the FF and FT magazine for several years but when the price went well over $100/yr and some very worthy charitable projects were seeking funds I failed to make the cut. No longer a subscriber to the finest English language FF magazine. But as a FF old-timer, my habits are pretty well established.
Have Fun!
