In a recent post on the FAOL section of the BB, the question was asked “If you only had one fly…?”. One of the answers was the SHWAPF. I went to the FOTW archives and found a pattern, but it calls for Rainey’s No-Dub in Glazed Carrot color. A google shows only one supplier in Utah and there is no Glazed Carrot color. What is the closest color, Rust or Cinnamon? And is there another source for it that might carry the specified color?
AC would be the first to tell you to experiment with colors and winging material for this fly. That being said, rug punch yarn works very well as a substitute for the No-Dub.
If you have trouble finding either, drop me an e-mail and I’ll snip a couple three yards off my spool of Glazed Carrot and send it to you.
I am on to this fly. I just started tying 3 weeks ago and it does seem pretty simple. However, can I use pheasant tail with a gray dubbing? Or pheasant tail with another color dubbing?
I don’t have badger hair and in fact only have pheasant tail, mallard flank, and partridge.
Paflyfisher The shwapf will work with an infinite combination of materials. I tie one with yarn from an old unraveling placemat and crystal flash. Just think of what bug you want to suggest and what colors/types of materials might work to do that. Tie one up and get it wet to see what you have.
all leaders tangle; mine are just better at it than most. Jim
You betcha buddy. Try using pheasant tail fibers wrapped around the hook as a body (like a PT Nymph) and using some of those mallard flank fibers as the back and wing. That should make a pretty buggy looking fly.
Hummmmmm…I think I’ll tie a few of those up for myself. Nice recipe, paflyfisher.

Sorry, but my computer expertise is really lacking. Can’t help you on the picture posting score. Glad those flies came out nice for ya. Once I get a little caught up here I’m gonna tie a few myself. I gotta keep reminding myself of the KISS principle. Keep It Simple, Stupid. Sometime I get wrapped up in flies that are designed to catch fishermen, not fish.
