I got a Cortland GRX 3/4 weight. The only line I have is a WF5F line. Would it matter if I fished the 5 weight line with a 3/4 weight rod? I really don’t know much about fly fishing cause this will be my 1st year “actually” fly fishing. I can’t wait to read your replies.
Fish 4, you’ll never know until you try it. Check out GlobalDorber on the sponser page to the left. You can get Canadian AquaNova size 3 or 4 WF or DT for $14.40 U.S. In my opinion, big bang for the buck. I swear by 444 peach, but I think the correct line, even an inexpensive one will aid your casting.
Try it. You may find it’s the best thing you ever did. I always had a hard time feeling my rod load when casting. I tried one line weight heavier than what the rod called for and it made a world of difference for me.
If you’re a distance caster, you will lose a little there.
Okay! I’ll try it and see how it is, if not I’ll get a new line. I didn’t think it would do much different but I guess I’ll find out. Thank yuo guys/girls for your replies.
Hey, Nick, if that is what you have, use it! As a beginner in PA you’ll probably be fishing streams and within 30 feet or less of where you are standing. The rig you have should do fine unless you start casting heavier flies like streamers.
Fly lines are important to casting results, not fishing results. If you want to wait until you know you are really hooked on this sport before you buy a good line, that is a logical decision.
If you had said you wanted to use a 3 on a 5 or 6 I would have worried, but an overloaded line is less of a problem --indeed, maybe no problem.
