Hey team,
Now that the site is live and members are settling in, I wanted to propose something to drive engagement: monthly community challenges.
The Idea
Each month, we run a themed challenge that encourages members to post. Some examples:
- “Tie Along” Challenge — A specific pattern is chosen, everyone ties their version and posts a photo. Voting at the end for best interpretation.
- Photo Contest — Best catch of the month, best river photo, best “fish with a view” shot.
- Species Challenge — “Catch a panfish on a fly this month and post about it.” Regional variations welcome.
- First Timer Stories — “Tell us about your first time fly fishing” or “first fish on a fly you tied.”
Why
- Drives return visits and new posts from lurkers
- Creates a sense of community participation that the old bulletin board had
- Gives moderators a positive reason to engage with members (not just flagging/moderation)
- Seasonal themes keep it fresh year-round
What I Need From You
- Do you think this is worth trying?
- Would any of you be willing to run a challenge for a month?
- Any ideas for the first challenge? I’m thinking something simple to start — maybe a “Show Us Your Bench” (photos of your tying setup) to get people comfortable posting photos.
No pressure, just thinking out loud. Let me know.
