I plan to tie some more poppers soon. I saw a guy use Perfect Poppers by Waspi…the soft bodied kind. I am trying to find a good source for it. If you know of one, please let me know. Also I do not know which hook would be good for them. I wanted a pencil popper, a bream popper, and just a regular bass sized one…say a size 1 or 2 in that. I know some make a special hook for it. I don’t have to have that ,but want a good style. It should be long enough, with a wider gap, and sharp. Comments?
For my deer hair poppers, I use the Tiemco (TMC) 8089. They come in size 2, 6 and 10, so you should be good on the basic bass and bream bugs.
Don’t know about a pencil popper though.
Thanks, I will make note of them. I saw some Signature CK52S and wondered how that would work. Also I wondered about stinger hooks, and how well they would work for poppers. I have some Gamakatsu stingers coming, and I thought they looked like the shape of the hook the guy was tying his poppers on. Those were B10 stingers that I ordered.
Look for Wapsi “Perfect Poppers with hooks”. http://www.wapsifly.com/pp.html Most are a pack of 10 bodies and 10 hooks. Just glue up (I use 5min epoxy), paint as desire as tie on a tail.

If you buy the poppers without hooks look for Mustad 33903 kink shanks hooks

Each of these from Wapsi come in 2 different sizes.

You should check with Hook & Hackle…They have a great selection of popper bodies and hooks
Um…except they don’t carry the “Perfect Poppers by Waspi” which she specifaccly asked for.
I basically tie all my bass flies on Gamakatsu B10S Stinger hooks. They are fantastic hooks.
Thanks to all of you who commented thus far. Yes, Bass Bug…I did specifically ask for that exact popper. I made a set of poppers that wasn’t this brand and soft type popper body. That was a mistake. The legs would not go through the body, even if I heated a bobbin needle super hot, it would stick half way. There was a man at the Toledo Bend Rendezvous, and he was making some supreme looking poppers. He only uses Perfect Poppers by Waspi…and I know why. The needle goes through the body very easy, and you can pull the legs through without any strain, or heating. I am going to make some of these poppers when I get all materials ordered and in. My first set came out better than expected last year. But this time, I think they will be even more rad than the previous ones were…hehehe.

Sorry, not a sponsor but they carry perfect poppers and I will assure you if you call and tell them what you want…they"ll match them with the “right” hooks etc.
Also, free shipping if over 25.00
Please remove if not appropriate for the site.
Thank you. I forgot about them. I ordered once from them in the past, and got good service.
Yep, like brhoff, Mad River Outfitters is my ‘local’ fly shop. Their fly tying section rivals if not exceeds Cabela’s and Bass Pro.
Don’t apologize for suggesting a fly shop or web site vendor thats not a sponsor. In fact if others concur on their likes for a particular company I say email that company and let them know about the sponsor program here.
I do use the sponsors here, but sometimes they don’t carry what I need. I wish I could just shop at one or two places, but we go back to they don’t stock all the stuff I need…so I have to shop at several places to get the required items.
Kelly has become a rather good fly tyer & friend… Ive seen some of her flies in person and most of them look great… Also had the pivilage of tying with her a few times… I think she arta tie at the sowbug this year…
i shop with MY MONEY and although i have ordered from a couple of sponsors on this site, like you, i find they may not have everything i’m looking for and have to shop elsewhere.
Those perfect poppers are as easy as: glue on the hook, paint the body, tie on a tail and insert rubber legs if you wish, but um…Kelly, can you paint them up like this?
Bugman, if you like my fly tying, I am deeply honored. I have been tying for less than two years…and still have a whole lot to learn though. When I first saw your flies, I had deep respect for you as a tyer. To top it off you and your wife have been a lot of fun, and I value our friendship. It is so cool to have a local tying friend, and a fishing one at that. I look forward to our next fishing trip. As far as the Sow Bug…hahaha…I am not ready for that at all. But I want to go to it this year, and watch and learn. Maybe in the future I will be ready for such an event. Those tyers, including you, are the cream of the crop. I cannot wait to see these tyers in action. Thank you for your kind words.
Those are Fred’s flies, and good grief NO, I cannot do anything close to that. Now maybe if I wanted to tie realistic I could one day. But right now, I just want some cool looking poppers. I may make some for the art side of it later. I am still working on techniques and new patterns now. Those flies are extremely good that you posted though!
KelKay,
I know you are looking for the premade bodies…that being said, most of us eventually get into making our own foam bodies from various sources…if you haven’t read the article on Dremel Bugs here, you may find it fun…I know I’m addicted to this type of fly construction…lots of fun.
And, for those who want to really express their creativity…take a look in the kids craft section at the hobbby/craft stores for a prodcut called FLOAM…basically small foam spheres in a moldable paste…you can mold them into any shape…the finished parts have a neat pebbly texture…they float…endless possibilities…
Buddy
you could make the popper bodies this way and not worry about finding pre made ones
thanks once again guys…I love getting tips on here
