Pfluger Reel

I have a Pfluger Medalist right hand retrieve, can it be changed to left retrieve?
Thanks,
Don

Yes - but I don’t know how to explain it to you. I changed mine over. Perhaps a tackle shop could do the conversion for you.

Yes it can be changed. There are 6 steps involved. 1)With a small screwdriver remove the two screws that hold down the metal ‘O’ ring that is attached around the base of the spindle, and set aside. 2)Remove the black pawl ring, TURN IT OVER and set aside. 3)You will now see a click post which needs to be turned 180 degrees to face the other way. This is not hard but is the most delicate part. 4)Replace the black pawl in the same position as it now sits on the side. 5)Re-attach the metal ‘O’ ring. 6)You will also have to unscrew the machine screws which attach the face rim to the back (and holds the posts in place) and move the appropriate (shorter) posts and line guard to the position appropriate to drawing the line from the other side of the reel. The complete change should take about 20 minutes.

Good instructions! But a word of warning is in order. Do this on a clean table in good light. Around step 3 and 4 you will uncover a very small ball bearing and spring which causes the outgoing “click” when line is taken out (or maybe the incoming click–I forget which) if you lose either your reel will be silent either on outgoing line or incoming line. I know this from sad experience.

Thanks guys, it worked!

analogbob: I have spare parts for my Pfluegers. Shakespeare is very forthcoming if you contact them and outline your needs. I have spare springs and clicks and screw - I did not have to pay and they were sent promptly to Toronto. I offered to pay and would not have minded what I expect would be a small charge, but there was no charge.

Thanks, Greg. I checked my old reel boxes and found a parts list. I’ll contact them. Meanwhile you might be interested in checking Len Codella’s website. [url=http://www.codella.com.:05adb]www.codella.com.[/url:05adb] He has new Pflueger accessories to upgrade your reels like a new foot to fit todays smaller reelseats. Machined rachets to smooth out the actions. Counterweights and metal cover buttons to replace the plastic ones on the reel. They even have a hat pin made out of the cover button. These will also fit the old Orvis Madison reels.

analogbob: I did know about the 1-pfoot, although I thought they were off the market for a while. The ‘drag plate’ rachet in metal looks like a good idea. Thanks for the tip.
