Pequist flys

Anybody have some good advise on flys and sizes. I throw them all(maybe not the right ones) I cant seem to hook up but I ve only seen a few fish caught . I see a lot of fish in there just no hits. Tom

Welcome Tom. Tough to say with out seeing you cast, without seeing how you approach a stream and without seeing your flies. If you come to the Pa. Fish-in I am sure you will get some good advise, but to just answer your question blind would be an exercise in guestimating.

There are several ways you can approach this question about fly selection. One of the easiest that only requires reading is to use a book like Art Flicks Streamside Guide. It lists hatches and dates for the catskills, which should be similar to PA. If you buy a selection of those flies and use the flies for the appropriate dates listed when you see fish rising, you should increase your chances of catching. Add an Elk Hare Caddis fly for the Caddis hatches too.

For nymphing, buy #16 Gold Ribbed Hares Ear flies, # 16 Pheasants tail nymphs and #14 Prince Nymphs. These are pretty universal and will stand a good chance of matching something.

Again this is trying to work in the universal mode, assuming you cannot identify any hatch. I understand your frustration and think that most of us have had similar problems in our fishing career.

good luck
