I bought some very nice reel seats for my banty project that I have been working on. They have black hardware that came with them (sliding). At first I was just going to do everything else in silver, but then I thought that would look weird. I decided to order the rest of the components in black to kind of keep up with the theme. I have a stripping guide that I really would like to use, but its chrome plated. Anyone know of a type of paint that would work to make this black. I?m thinking hobby store model paint, or maybe Rustoleum? I haven?t used either in a while so I?m wondering if anyone has used something with success.
Also just to update everyone on how my reel seat luck has been turning out?I walked out of the bathroom this morning and noticed my dog chewing on what was left of a pencil, except that it wasn?t a pencil?it was my zebra insert for one of the aforementioned reel seats. I would have gotten extremely mad at him, but I?m taking him to get neutered on Thursday so I figure it?s his world for a couple of days.
Personally, I wouldn’t feel comfortable painting the guides since they’ll be in contact with the line and the paint might rub off on it. I’d say you just need a new stripping guide. They’re pricey, I know, but if you plan on owning/using this rod for the forseeable future, it’s worh investing in (even if it’s just a “banty”). Sorry to hear about your reelseat. Does this mean you’re needing a new one for that rod? If so, shoot me a PM. Hope this helps.

You didn’t say if the stripper is chrome with a ceramic insert or chrome plated brass (ala Perfection). H&H makes a ceramic-lined stripper with a very hard (DLC) black coating. Perfection has an all metal stripper with a TiC coating that is a dark bronze. The Fuji Alconite New Concept stripper is very light and available in black, but is, of course a modern design, not traditional. It is a very good looking guide, though. REC offers Mildrum Carboloy strippers (very traditional) with a dark finish, or you can take a regular NS carboloy stripper and “flame it” with a propane torch, which will be dark, but not black.

IMO painting the stripper guide would likely disappoint you and end up looking painted compared to the rest of the hardware. I would opt to purchase the proper finished stripper guide you require to complete your rod. It’s cost would more than outway the paint job in personal satisfaction and longevity of the beauty of the entire rod itself.
Joe, that is a great point. I was worried about it rubbing off for aesthetic reasons, I never thought about it affecting the line. I’ll tell you, the nice thing about buying the wrong thing, is that I know I’ll have a use for it on another rod. I should be ok on the reel seat. I have other inserts that will look equally as nice, but thanks for the offer?and as always, the good advice.
Cross Creek, the stripper is chrome plated. Thanks for the heads up on the H&H stripper. I was having trouble finding one in black, which is why I asked about the painting. I must have just assumed that only the insert was black on the H&H ceramic model because I could swear I looked their site over for one of these.
Try www.anglersworkshop.com. They stock the black H&H strippers. REC probably has them, too. The ceramic insert on all finishes is black, so you probably did see a chrome stripper with black insert.
