I pay $.50 a fly.
Cheaper than I can tie them.[/quote]
They must be asian/mylasia made pieces of junk that fall apart after a couple fish?
American flies are the right way to go.

Wrong again. Just like DShock. (who says i’m lying about going to Colorado) Take his side, and i’ll prove you wrong every time.
These are the nicest flies i’ve seen, and i’ve compared them to $2.00 flies. All tied at his place with the best materials.
Glad to see they are american.
I however, Will stick to tying my own flies with good materials, They last WAY longer than storebought.
I feel more attached to the sport this way.
Nothing compares to the feeling when you catch all your fish on your own made flies. ![]()
That’s my plan too, but for now I have to buy them. I’ve been too busy with the move to Co. I’m taken off tomorrow.
When I get to BV i’m going to work for a small shop tying flies. He’s going to show me and supply all the materials and pay me by the dozen. I’ll be doing simple flies like Woolly Buggers at first to get me started. We’ll do all the tying in winter and then fish spring to fall.
That will get me started tying, and I can experiment on the flies I want to fish with. I have lots of time to mess with it.

I have no problem paying $1.50 or $2.00 a fly if they are tied well. Chris hit it right about most cheap flies falling apart after a short time…so, where’s the economy in that?
Scott
I’m sure that’s the case a lot, but Tom has been tying for 50 years. I’m sure his flies will hold up better than what I can do. A lot faster than me too. I gave him my oder on Monday and got it Thursday. I don’t think i’ll have a problem with Tom’s flies falling apart. I’ve talked to a couple of guys using them and they said they hold up as good as anything they’ve tried. I’m impressed with how they look, but haven’t tried them yet.
I just want to fish what time I have left before winter. I’ll start thinking of flies then.
The bottom line is I can’t afford $2.00 flies.
I have several fly boxes loaded for different situations (bass, steelhead, sunfish, nymphs, etc. plus an inventory of 12 Plano boxes at home - but I only take 4 of them at most to the river. I think two things need to happen to be able to leave some boxes behind. 1) take only 3 of any one patter/size to the river, this reduces the number of boxes right away - if you lose all 3 then you just have to try something else for a few hours, this is not the end of the world. 2) Make a decision based on the type of fish, water and season and just stick with it for the day. “Today I am fishing small streamers, nymphs and emergers”, or Today I am only fishing mayfly imitations (nymph, emerger and dry) + some stonefly/buggers and leaving the caddis for later in the season".
For trout my nymph box contains both caddis and mayfly, there is one box of buggers and stoneflies, and one of streamers. Sometimes I take a wet fly box and allow the buggers to cover for the streamers. These three boxes can get improvements, but hardly need to change. Then I have a dry-fly box (with compartments) that gets changed up as the season progresses. I have more fun trying to fool the fish with what I have decided to take to the river than I did when I was weighed down not only with several boxes but also too many options/decisions in mid-stream.
ive bought flies from bentons fly box and a few of the discount fly houses on the net and find the quality is good to very good and they don’t fall apart after one fish.
if you havent bought flies from any of the discount houses then you shouldnt make comments that they are cheaply tied. not all american tied flies are perfect.
flyandtie, you seem to be very negative when it comes to other peoples postings. seems you like to ridicule people that don’t agree with you.
maybe when you get enough allowance you should try a sample of flies for different online fly shops and see what quality really is out there.
just an observation!
Yeah it can get a little crazy if you fish for trout over the course of a season, and if you throw at bass, panfish and other species it gets worse.
I use a lot of large inexpensive plastic 18 compartment boxes (from hardware stores for about $3 each) for dries, wets and nymphs. I put each big streamer in plastic sleeves (about 1 1/2" x 8") to hold them and put them in cheap 6 compartment plastic boxes with the long compartments. You can fit a ton of streamers in those boxes without them fouling up if they’re in the sleeves. ( I do a lot of Saltwater fishing and they really help a lot so they should work for your bass size clousers, divers and such). I use these storage boxes to top off the fly boxes in my vest for FW fishing.
For FW, I have a large 2 compartment wader bag, that is big enough to hold wet waders and boots in the bottom, and has a another compartment to hold a vest with fly boxes, a couple of reels in foam cases, and whatever stock boxes I think I’ll need so I can get stuff out of my truck if I need it. That way I can just grab my rod and the bag and I’m good to go. At worst it’s just a walk back to the truck if I forget anything in my vest.
In the vest I always keep fly flotant, leaders etc, and fly boxes for trout:
a small “midge” box with flies size 22 and under
a caddis box with EHC and soft hackles (for pupae)
a “rough water” dry box with Stimulators and Wulffs
a streamer box, one side wooly buggers and large stonefly nymphs, other side muddlers, bucktails etc
a “big dry” box, which I swap out during the season (eg in June I’ll have Eastern Green Drakes, Brown Drakes and some Stoneflies, which I’ll replace with grasshoppers in August)
a couple of mayfly boxes where I keep nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners by hatch-- I keep a BWO box in my vest all season, but swap out others back into the large 18 compartment storage boxes based on the hatches. For example a box that holds Hendricksons in early May will swap out in early June with Sulphers, then Isonychias in the fall etc.
I don’t fish for bass and panfish much, but if I did I would keep a small vest size box with panfish poppers, rubber spiders etc. for panfish and a box with bigger stuff for bass like bass bugs, divers and clousers etc. in those envelopes. (Just don’t put a wet one back in an envelope until it dries or it’ll rust.) And I’d keep them in the wader bag so I’d always have them, and swap out most of the foo foo trout stuff in my vest but keep the streamer box with wooly buggers and muddlers, a mayfly box with dries wets and nymphs for panfish and bass (if the Olentangy gets a white fly hatch for example).
Hope this helps.

I’ve decided on a compromise between 3 different methods of organization. I have one all purpose box that contains a selection of my favorites. If I know the water well and/or I want to travel light, I can go out with just that box and do fine. If I don’t know the water or feel like matching specific hatches and sizes will be important on a given day I have several boxes organized by species kind of Caddis, Midges, etc and then streamers and buggers, poppers. Then I also have boxes for species specific flies like steelhead, salt, and salmon. I pack my vest with leaders, floatant, tools and stuff like that and pack my fly boxes into 2 chest packs one for warm water and one for cold water. The boxes for streames, WB and some others move back and forth between the 2.

These are my fly boxes, Honestly, somewhat organized as best as I could, what with all the "WHAT IF’s " you have on the stream or lake… Sorry for the fuzzy Pics, My go to fly is there HEHEee
alphabetically. Only it gets confusing when I reach “bug”.
My flyboxes start out with a couple patterns in them, and then randomize over the next several months, at which point I dump everything in a pile and start over.

There are a lot of good looking flies here and what sounds like some pretty good organizational methods. I still haven’t re-organized mine, but plan on it soon.
On a side note. I’d like to step to the plate for Chris (flyandtie). Not only have I found the vast majority of his posts optimistic and friendly, but interesting as well. Normand, I could say the same (as what you said about flyandtie) for Gramps, but I know that it is usually in good fun and not ment to be a negative or offensive post. That is one drawback to this form of communication—no voice tones can be typed effectively. Personally, I don’t have any beef with anyone here and hope to keep it that way. (Paul, I know you mean well and are not offended or trying to be offensive-good luck on the move!) I also hope that this thread is not hijacked into something else. If you’d like to discuss that nature of things, we all know where to find the Sound Off board. Seeing that I started this thread, I’ll end that line of thinking by saying again that there are some great ideas and great looking boxes so far here. I’m curious what other’s boxes look like. Anyone else care to share a picture???

Hey Wild - good thread and there were some great ideas shared - I definitely plan to re-do my boxes so that I take less to the stream.
Personally - I’m offended that you’re so unoffensive. To heck with your good-naturedness and carefree, happy ways! It just doesn’t make for good TV. ![]()
And after seeing DG’s post, I plan to organize mine in reverse alphabetical order - that way I have a little practice next time I get stopped and am asked to do the alphabet backwards.
All right, I’ve had it. Jim, you’ve pushed me over the edge! Your about to see WILD one in his full light…

THANK YOU FOR PROVING MY POINT.
Too much happiness will make anyone’s head explode.
Now get out there and get depressed or else.
And that goes for you, too Mr. FlyandTie.
