I am keeping my eyes open for a new travel rod(s). Currently have a 4pc St Croix Imperial 5wt and a dorbeR 4pc 7wt. I know LLB has good service, has anyone cast these rods? Thanks.
Have a 6 weight. I like it. No problems. Good action.
Greg, I love bean, but have you considered the Cabela’s stowaway series? I have two–a 5 peice 5 wt. and a 7 peice 8 wt, and both are great rods. The reason I bought them was a Fly Fish Anmerica product review on travel rods. Based on their findings, the two best rods were the T&T for about $600, and the Stowaway for about $100. The disadvantage is now warrantee, which you’d have with the bean.
Micus: I just presumed that at $100 the Cabela’s would be too soft and tip heavy, although I know they are getting good press. My normal fishing rods are St Croix Avid or Legend Ultra (for the most part) and I also have Lamiglass and Fenwick World Class. I like something at least that firm. What say you? I will look at that review if it is online.
I’ve a friend that has the 5pc 5wgt stowaway - very soft and very tip heavy. I THINK the rod has been “redesigned” since the article comparing travel rods. It will cast a fairly decent line, but far from the St Croix LU - which is my main rod. The blank is now marked “98% graphite” which is, I think, first generation material. Overall I think it would make a more than acceptable back-up rod at not much $$.

The Cabelas line from that article has changed. I don’t believe that the offer a 7 piece rod anymore. It was discontinued because they were receiving a large amount of broken rods in return. The rods were not faultly, but were accidently being broken by the user when breaking them down, and taking them apart. They had a weird looking ferrule design and people were putting them together with too much force and theyu would get stuck and either not come apart, or break by pulling too hard. It’s a shame because they outperformed any other rod that I have. I was able to buy 2 when they were being sold off.
Soup…I’m looking at the 2005 Cabela’s catalog; it shows the Stowaway7 and touts a new ‘tip over butt’ ferrule system and single foot titanium guides. Can’t find the 2004 but I know they had different ferrules and snake guides. Maybe that’s the improvement.
Still, you’ll never avoid user error (carelessness).
I had a Stowaway5 in 8.5 3wt. that was great. Cast well (no pun intended) and was strong enough to land some nice LMB on occasion.
