Online Fly Tying

Im starting up tying classes again starting August 17, 2011… Held every wednesday & sunday at 2000hrs (8pm civillian time)… You will need skype which can be downloaded for free on http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/windows/?intcmp=ch2-getSkype-chal-main , a mike and a cam… Classes are free of charge… The version of skype you have dont matter but the basic one is free… As for the fly patterns each lesson will be sent out on skype at the time it starts… I might record some of the lessons as we go… Not to wory cause it will only record me on my end…

Hi Ivan;

Cool! Typically, What time do you have the classes?

Do you have any patterns in mind?

Wayneb

basic skype or premium skype?

Either or

Hey Bugman,

I noticed that you are in Texas… is that Central Time? So your 2000 is my 2200. Gettin’ late. I’ll have to think about it.

Dave

Yep… That would be central time here…

do you have any way to record them? Just wondering as I am working on those days and times.
good luck with it, it’s nice that you are doing this.

Have fun,
George

Excuse my dumbness… but what is skype?

Hi,
I was in the military back in the late 60’s. I take it you mean “GMT”??? I see you live in Texas. I live in Hawaii. Your 8pm civilian time would be different from mine. And, GMT 8pm would be different from both.
I would like to watch, but need to know which 2000hrs time you mean…
Byron

Its a video program similar to yahoo messanger only much better…

(UTC-6:00) Central Time (US & Canada)… Over…

I can record each lesson on skype as i teach them but I dont go through that extra step on my end… Now if some folks taking the tying classes wanted to have a recording of the session, they could hit the record button skype and do so on they own…

Roger, and out…
Do you provide your skype address? Over

My skype name is flyfishingtyer … Real name is Ivan W. Crews… Over…

Roger that…

If yoll need help seting things up we can meet on skype on the 16th at 8pm just to get everything in order… it is 2400hrs or 12:00pm here now…

To Michael and others…about Skype and all. Skype is like many other websites. It has various levels you can use or sign up for. But for the tying lessons the totally free version works just fine. I suggest you just go to skype.com and download the free version. It is harmless and you can see it for yourself and set it up. Feel free to pm me if you want some help. I have used it a lot. So pm me and I can answer questions or explain a lot about how it works. It is pretty simple…but it is probably sorta helpful if someone kinda tells you about how some of the features work. Gimme a pm long before the 16th and I can help you get started. The sixteenth might be sorta busy…maybe not. But I can help you BEFORE 16th and maybe you kinda get a more comfortable feel about it.

As far as tying with Ivan, I have done it many many times. I have not had that many teachers, but have been to some fly club tying classes and have had a friend or two occasionally show me how to tie a fly. THERE IS NO BETTER TEACHER than Ivan online! He is the most patient coach/instructor I have ever seen. Believe me I am sure I have tested his patience to the limit. NEVER has he shown impatience, or talked down his nose at you…or said anything like…well we already did that in the past! ANY question is ok with him. And it doesn’t matter if you are already an expert fast pro or a rookie or fresh beginner with him. His outlook is he may learn something from someone else. But HE runs the class and such as it should be. You may be so good that having to wait for ME to finish a step may cause you to drop out. I will try to get better, or I will drop out so it can go smooth. But you will not find a better teacher. He can tie anything, and if you don’t have the material called for he will tell you a substitute you can use for that step. And when it gets a tad confusing, he will draw it on a white paper with a black marker, and he is absolutely excellent at doing this to show what is going on.

All tiers are welcome to his lessons. Not my class…but I have tied enough with him to feel safe in speaking on his behalf. You do not have to join any club, pay anything, be in on every class…nuttin’ but free online lessons. Each lesson is a stand alone complete class. So you do not have to worry about missing any lesson. Just sign in on skype if you wanna tie, or do not if you are busy or not at home. It is no big deal. He will teach a fly every lesson. You will need to create a skype name for yourself and skype…well I hate to say skype keeps a record of you…not in a sense to be dangerous to your identity. It is sorta like FAOL in the sense that the handle or name you choose may already be taken by someone else. So you will have to create a name or handle you wish to go by. From the beginning on that will be your you on Skype. So anyone that wants to contact you must put your you…name, handle into their skype list of contacts. uh…like I said pm me iffen you wanna learn about it without having to go through all the trial and error of something you haven’t seen before.

Just trying to help out. Some people may be a little skeptical about the deal, or skype or technical issues. It is really a great opportunity for you people and it is easy and a piece of cake. You can sign in and participate, just watch and listen, and continue to do so every day there is a lesson. Or just quit signing in cause you are too bored or already know how to tie that fly. He can teach spun deer hair bass flies, size 32 flies, dubbing, trout flies, salmon flies, you name it. Ivan can do it. And he is the GREATEST at walking YOU through how to tie any of them.

You will need to set up one of two ways. All parts available at Wal Mart. I bought all Logitech stuff. You will need a way to watch, be seen, and talk. So you will need a pc camera…the little eyeball looking thingy. Then pc speakers and a microphone. Or…a talking headset. Meaning one like a telephone operator would use. Covers boaf ears and has a mike that swings out in front of your face. These are available at Wal Mart in Logitech brand. I happen to have both but no big deal. I do prefer to have speakers, a separate free standing microphone, and a pc camera. That way you can talk and watch hands free…and not be stuck connected to the computer with a headset cord. You then have to remove it every time you go get a soda, or material or whatever. And btw if you already have computer speakers they will work fine. You won’t need to go buy pc speakers, and if your monitor has a built in microphone you won’t have to buy that either. The pc camera I bought said it came with a headset with microphone. It is just an earbud and the microphone is in the cord…not my favorite setup cause I have bad hearing. So I got the pc camera, but then purchased a better headset with mike…and I got the free standing microphone and speakers as well. I think the Pc camera I got was $20, and the free standing mike only $9. Speakers were another $20 but that was before I understood the several pc speakers I had laying around work just fine.

Sorry for length of msg. Just trying to help out with the understanding of it all. It’s the best fly tying free online you will ever find. And the price is certainly right on.

Wish you all good luck, and if you tie…perhaps you should at least check it out. You might be missing out on something very very good.

Yes i am… wednesday & sunday at 2000hrs till around 2200hrs… over…

Okay, I will let them know. Thanks Bugman!
