On-Stream Tobacco, etc..

snipe, gave up smoking 30 years ago, that was easy, but coffee,if i had to give that up the guy with the black coat would be a hole digger

make a rod, catch a fish

In the days when I smoked untill having an experience similar to Snipe. The thing I feared most was that I might fall off the end of my cigarette. Well it happened and I wish it had happened earlier. Still upright and breathing BUT still miss my Dummy every now and again “G” Jax

I’m a much better Fly fisher when talking fishing, than when I’m Actually Fly fishing!

Copenhagen long cut. I also enjoy a cigar from time to time, something like a Fuente or a Romeo and Juliet and pretty much anything with a maduro wrap that’s not crapola. Also like to have a flask along that’s filled with Dickel or other bourbon but I can never remember to fill it. Cheap cans of beer are good too. I’m a real health freak.

In the early part of my so far brief military career when I was a cadet I became hooked on dip, specifically Copenhagen. It really seems to help pass the time and take the edge off of sleep deprivation. Of course the habit migrated to my various fishing activities.

I recently quit/stopped dipping. This is probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to do! But it is honest to God some really nasty stuff and it’s pain in the butt to hide the habit from whoever my girlfriend is at the time.

The hardest aspect of quitting dip has been the fishing part. One of my favorite rituals on a day of fishing is popping a dip in after rigging up. Maybe it is the placebo effect, but it always seemed to focus me and send a signal to my mind saying “It’s time to get work”. I’ve been fishing 5 or so times this year since quitting and I still dig around my vest looking for a can of dip. It’s a little unnerving at first but once I get going I get past the phase. I used to almost constantly have a dip in when fishing and at the end of the day my lip would hurt a little and I would have some tobacco residue in my mouth. Nasty

I used to chew, like coach robb, during my college baseball days, but I hated dip, I enjoyed Red Man Golden Blend (mmmmm), I stopped a few years back, mainly by eating a truckload of sunflower seeds. I was playing golf a few months ago and found a pack of red man (that stay fresh pouch really works) and had a chew. I have never done it on stream, mainly because I would hate to spit in the water for fear of it flowing down to another angler, I feel that is pretty rude. Anyway I was able to have that one chew and not crave it which was nice. I also had an uncle that used to smoke a pipe, I loved the smell and I guess if I ever nicotine up again I would like to try a pipe. I also enjoy an ice cold Budweiser, or Leininkugels Honey Wheat, and on occasion I am know to have a Crown and Coke, or a shot of Jagermeister (even though that only gets me into trouble).

That’s WHAT I got.

Hi agdchi!
Mine is Skoal and a pipe with a blend of rich black cavendish and mellowed burleys.

Wow! My 3rd post ever on this site and it makes it to page 2. It’s interesting trying to decipher personlaities based on posts alone. Any other texans on that post on this board? Agdchi is short for Aggie Delta Chi. I went to Texas A&M and was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity.

I truly understand what those of you that are trying to quit are going throuh. Some say nicotine is more addicting than heroin, and although I’ve never tried it, I don’t doubt it!

Levi Garrett, the snack of champions.

A good smoke-something along the lines of Montecristo, Bolivar, H.Upman.

Good beer-preferably western micros-Fat Tire, Moose Drool, Alaskan Amber, Mirror Pond Ale, Cascade Golden Ale

Benjo–how do you drink that cheap stuff when you have Moose Drool and so many other good beers to drink? I wish they were distributed here in GA.

I’ve been known to smoke a couple swisher sweets and swig a little Hot Damn while out on the river

I usually smoke my pipe, mostly filled with Dunhill 965. I usually don;t smoke while fishing tho, which is too complicated an operation for me.

On occasion, however, I have been know to enjoy a cheap cigar.

JBW

Levi is good too, that and the Redman Golden Blend, uggh I’m drooling.

Weed of choice depends on the place I’m fishing.

If it’s slow and easy I opt for a good Dominican or Honduran where I can enjoy it. If it?s fast and furious I opt for a decent Dominican the kind you buy in bundles for $30 bucks. I stopped smoking the good ones all the time since I chomped them more than smoked them and at prices approaching a spool of fluorocarbon tippet material it didn?t make sense. I save the pipe and extra good Cubans for camp.

And the only other nourishment I require streamside is a couple of ounces of Blanton?s, Knob Creek, or a 15 year old Laphroaig. With apologies to Freewheelin? Franklin; my motto is:

?Whiskey will get you through times of no fish better than fish will get you through times of no whiskey?.

blanton’s is damn fine bourbon.

I neither drink nor smoke. OK, maybe a beer with or after dinner once in a while. Neither one is happening in my car, either, if you fish with me. No smoking in my house, but you can have a beer or a wee dram as long as you don’t puke on my floor or some such. Last guy who got drunk while fishing as my guest never went fishing with me again.

Personally, I would rather not fish downwind of someone smoking a fine cigar. I do not enjoy the smell, and while it may enhance the experience for whoever is smoking it, it ruins mine. You wanna argue, I can introduce you to my father and his oxygen hose. If you want to smoke on the river while fishing with me, move downwind first.

I usually smoke my pipe filled with Captain Black. I also do not stop fishing to smoke my pipe. I have found I can smoke the pipe, hold the lighter in my stripping hand and the rod in my other hand. Wish I could say that I used to smoke and quit, but I can’t.

Dear aqdchi,

No hope without Cope.

tsk, tsk. A “good” cigar on the water. With my wading skills and forgetfulness, I’d rather go cheap. Backwoods cigars all the way. You can dunk those things under water, bend them in a ‘U’, and they still pull nicely. Plus, if you continue fishing while smoking (it’s hard not keeping the line wet), and you hook into something and happen to lose your cigar in the excitement, you’re only out fifty cents or so.

I love the post-release victory dance of lighting up a cigar, it’s the cherry on top of a good day.

In a word “BAH”. Guys, you’re all obviously educated enough to be able to read. Stop!! You’ll surely get to fish many years longer if you do.

Sorry to preach but…nothing is more annoying than a Reborn Non-Smoker who gave it up cold turkey (three packs a day) after 30 years. The feat was accomplished way back in the mid eighties and that’s why I’m still here to chide y’all.

Snow on the roof with fire in the hearth

DG, you can fish with me anytime!
