I have a chance to purchase a box of misc old fly lines and leaders. They are still boxed and unused. They also are probably at least 20 years old (estate sale). Someone else bought the equipment and passed on the lines and leaders. Do you think they are still useable or have they aged too much.
Thanks
Charles
Hi TexasCharles,
It depends how they were stored? If they were stored in a cool dry place they could be alright. Can you get a look at them to see what they look like? The other thing is how much do they want for them? If the price is not to expensive it might be worth while.

I say they are garbage. Don’t waste your money.
I’ve got a Scientific Anglers “Wet Cel” DT-6-S with the Ambercrombie and Fitch price tag on it. $11.00. Been wondering the same thing.
Charles,
Send them all to me. I’ll make sure they are properly disposed of and save you the trouble.
I bought them figuring how wrong can I go for $20. Looks like about 25 leaders of several sizes and 6 fly lines.

You can always use them for yard pratice or if there not badly cracked just use them if one breaks you know it’s nogood not to be a smart A** or anything. Later Matt
To each there own !
When my Dad passed on a few years back I got all of his fishing gear. He had old line and who knows what all, especially some fly line that he had for who knows how long. But Dad took extra good care of his stuff and a lot of it was still serviceable … and I used a lot of it more in memory of him.
My concern about old fishing line is - will it fail just at the time I need it most …? And who can give really give an exact time as to when you cross over the point of no return!

If the coatings don’t feel stiff and brittle and the price isn’t too high I’d say it’s probably worth it. I have a fly line that is over ten years old, but don’t have a rod to use it with at the moment and it seems to be in great shape.
