I just found out, I have to have yet another knee surgery. New surgeon this time though, I think maybe this guy can fix it. (Cross fingers) So, I suspect I will be laid up for a while, except for therapy.
Anyway, as most of you know, I am new at fly fishing and will be mostly fishing small streams and creeks for bass and panfish. So at the risk of angering the purist crowd, I thought I might try to find a good how-to-video on fishing with nymphs and streamers. I am sure you all probably already know, no matter how many channels you have on TV, there is never anything on. So I thought I might try to buy a video about something that I would enjoy and be beneficial. I have the Basic Fly Casting and the Advanced Fly Casting that Scientific Anglers has put out with Doug Swisher. They are a bit dated, but I have really enjoyed watching them. I know he has a couple out about fishing for trout, but I suspect it is more dry fly fishing, which I enjoy watching, but I thought I might be able to find one that would benefit me more.
Now, I know, I know you can catch bass and panfish on dry flies and I can’t wait to try it. I have always wanted to fly fish, and I hope to be doing this for years to come. So, I suspect anything I can do to up my odds of actually landing a fish every once in a while, will help me to keep this dream going.
I think all of Doug’s videos are excellent. His “Strategies for Selective Trout” video is no exception. It covers everything: nymphs, streamers, dries and wets. Highly recommended.
I have “A Casting Approach to Nymphing Tactics” by Joe Humphreys. I also am relatively new to flyfishing and I really enjoyed this video. If you pm me your addy I will lend it to you. Just return it when finished.

I have had 3 knee surgeries and unfortunately what the surgeon fixes, Ar-thur-itis attacks!!
Yup - you should see him in person! What I’ve always loved most about Joe is his enthusiasm for fishing - he gets all fired up, and it’s contagious. I consider him the best fly fisherman of all time, and he’s just a super nice guy.
Don’t hold me to this, but there is a chance we’ll get to fish with him up in Waterville.
I appreciate the offer and I may have to take you up on it. Right now at least, I think my wife is feeling sorry for me and is agreeing to take a trip to Nashville. (surgery still hasn’t been scheduled, so I hope I have a couple of weeks) There at the BassPro shop I am hoping to get it for myself. I have to take back a vest that tore up, so I am hoping to make a trade. But if things don’t work out, I’ll be sure and PM you if you don’t mind.
I too, have bad knees and they’re getting worse. So I use a Garden Kneeling Bench. I turn it upside down and sit on it. Works great, but there is no chasing fish downstream.
I think it was Kurt Vonnegut (sp) that gave a commencement speech to the graduating class of either Harvard or Yale. His longwinded speech boiled down to this; “Be good to your knees. You’ll miss them when they’re gone.”
I too am a devoted fan of Joe Humphreys and Kelly Galloup. You can’t go wrong with any of their videos. Kelly recently came out with another video called “Nymphing by the Numbers”
You can purchase through Amazon, or directly from Kelly. I’ve picked up stuff through him and his service is excellent. It costs the same from either place. Just depends on who you want to have the profit. Nymphing By the Numbers
Joe Humphreys DVDs can be purchased at http://www.appoutdoors.com/joehumphreys/ I’ve delt with them and they too are exellent to deal with. I had to do my order over the phone because there it’s not set up for Canadian customers. All went smoothly.
This was actually an essay called “Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young” written by Mary Schmich and published in the Chicago Tribune as a column in 1997. The association with Kurt Vonnegut was an urban legend. Here’s a link to the info: Wear Sunscreen
And you’re right about that line being in it. Very cool. Here’s the lyrics to the song made popular by Baz Luhrmann, which uses that essay:
Joe was my instructor at PSU back in 1988 and I’ll NEVER forget fishing Spring Creek with the man. I watched him cast a fly into a cup of St Paddy’s green beer using only his arm, no rod involved. I’d LOVE to run into him again, on the water. Waterville? Can you tell me more?
Joe’s nymphing vid is phenomenal. Not sure it’s what the OP is asking for, mind you, but still a great vid. You can watch the line pause for a nanosecond in slow mo and “bam” Joe is into a nice Spring Creek brown…
