Non traditional Feathers

The other day I was cleaning around the house and moving stuff around when my wife said “Stop” .
Not being a fool I stopped.
She bent down and picked up a parakeet feather.
She held it up proudly and said " Here honey , you can use this to tie a fly".
“Dumb old girl” thought I . You cant tie a fly out of a parakeet feather .
Then my next thought was “Dumb old guy”, why cant I use a parakeet feather to tie a fly.
Has any one used parakeet feathers? Or parrot feathers.
Or any kind of pet store bird feathers.
Is this a viable thought or am I wasting precious brain cells on a fruitless quest for diversity.

Yes, many people tie with fur from the dog brush and feathers from the bird cage.

You are only limited by your imagination.

A lot of fully dressed salmon flies use macaw feathers, now unattainable without a pet bird. Just substitute the feather in a pattern that uses a feather in similar design as the paraket feather. You may be pleasantly suprised at the results.

yup I use my macaws feathers a bit and they do work nicely

hmm, anybdy know what the pet stores do with all the feathers that are lying on the bottoms of all those cages?

I wondered that not long ago. I figure you might get one or two out of them before they realize they could make abuck off them. lol

I think they usually throw alot of them away, as the paperwork to show that they are legal is to much to do. That is an explanation that I was gibven a few years ago. The store owner told me that it was cheaper to find a souce to buy them that what it would be for him to charge me for filling out the paperwork.
