Nickle plate (New rod Build)

What could I use to remove nickle plate from a reel seat and some line guides ? Needs to be something that is fairly easy to get without having to order & not overly priced… Planing on removing the nickle plate then plating with 18kt gold for a new rod build im gonna start soon…

Heres a teaser fer ya untill i start the rod & post pictures of the progress…

The rod blank itself im building out of black bamboo from japan when it gets here… The guides, fittings & seat are going to be 18kt gold plated, thread wraps are gonna be the goulbrod (wrong spelling) gold and black… The finnished rod will be a 6wt 8ft 2 peice rod with a cigar type cork grip with 3 flies inlayed in it…

Bugman, Unless you plan to do the gold plating yourself, the plating company you are going to use should be able to strip the old nickle plate from the components. We have it done for car and motorcycle parts all the time. BTW, that sounds like it’s going to be a way purty rod when completed. Jim

Im doing it myself…

Muriatic acid from the hardware store will do the trick. It is also sold as Concrete Cleaner.

You should not have to remove a nickel plating prior to plating with gold. Nickel silver and nickel alloys are used as base metals for gold and silver plating. Many items are plated with nickel before plating with gold. Check with your plating company before you do anything.

True but this reel seat is old and the nickle is gone in spots… so i need to remove the little bit that remains & redo it then i can do the gold plate right… I used to restore antique clocks & phonographs and had to buy a plating setup which wasnt cheap along with other tools of the trade… Got to thinkin & figured i would do a rod and see how it turns out…

Wow sounds like its gonna be a beauty
