Newbie Here

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. My name is Aaron, I am new here and new to fly fishing. In fact, yesterday was my first day to fly fish. Got pretty frustrated at first but after I caught a few fish (fallfish), I am probably hooked! Looking forward to learning more and this looks like a good place to learn.
I am 56 years young and have fished all my life but never fly fished. Looking forward to meeting people on here!

Welcome Aaron and congratulations on your first fly fishing trip and your success!! Beware, this sport is not called “the benign addiction” without good reason. And, you have come to the right place, if it isn’t known here it probably isn’t known.

Aaron, if you’re married you’ll need to find a way to camouflage equipment purchase receipts from you-know-who. I’m here for you.

Welcome aboard Aaron. There’s lot’s of good folks on this site. A few even hail from Texas. Just a heads up. New guys bring donuts and keeps the coffee on the fire. Jim

Welcome! Never too late to enjoy it, that’s for sure. Remember, most of what you need to know about flyfishing, you already learned spinfishing. It’s just applied differently.

Welcome to fly fishing, and welcome to FAOL. These are what an old friend of mine used to call “Good People”. If you are like me, put a little oil on your spinning gear to ward off the effects of sitting unused for longer periods of time.

Welcome aboard Aaron! Glad to have you. If you haven’t wondered over to the main page, please do so. Lots of great information over there. Read about our founder, the Ladyfisher. She’s the reason we have this wonderful place.

A big welcome from Wyoming!

Welcome, fish are not the only thing that gets hooked.

Welcome Aaron, to a new favorite past-time. Don’t give up before giving it a good go, and never be too proud to ask for help. I’ve watched a lot of people benefit from a day class at BPS for fly fishing. I’ve seen experienced fly anglers learn a thing or two.
Just remember, air knots are not our friends !!!

Well you came to the right place… Welcome and sent you a pm…

Thanks for the big welcome! I have read almost all of fly fishing 101 on the home page. Really good articles. Also watched several videos on You Tube and practiced casting in the yard before I went to the creek.
I bought a Cortland 8’ 6" 5/6 Silver Stream outfit at Wal Mart to start with. After reading the rod action section I think I might be more happy with a faster action rod but I should probably practice with this one more. Also picked up a few flies which I know very little about. Two day ago, I had never heard of tippet!
Any advise for a beginner as far as equipment would be appreciated!

Aaron welcome to FAOL, these are some of the nicest and most helpful people you can ever hope to meet in life. When you are ready to start dressing your own fly patterns, I host the yearly “Beginner’s Only Fly Swaps” each November through May.

The FAOL site is chuck full of information on every topic under the sun about fly fishing.

If you ever have a question, you will find help on the FAOL Bulletin Board and also in the FAOL Chat room.

Welcome on board Aaron, it is a fine madness. IMHO calling monofilament tippet is a marketing ploy to raise the price, I have never quite figured out the whole X line size thing, I use 2#, 4# & 6# mono for tippet. Before you get used to the tapered leader idea someone will ambush you with furled leaders (which are good things). Equipment is going to be dependent upon what you fish for, for bluegill and crappie about any old reel will do, for bass and larger something with a pretty good drag is a good idea but you live in the land adjacent to water inhabited by large red fish and other such beasties, you may want to get a reel with lots of line capacity and a great drag and a rod capable of flinging comparatively heavy flies.

Hopefully you can find some old guy who will take a youngster like you under this wing and guide you along. If not when you have a question ask it there are thousands of years of experience here. There is likely nothing you think of trying that some of us, if not most of us, have not already tried. If you think it’s a dumb question, it has already been ask, you weren’t there then, ask it again.
