I saw this new fly in the Orvis Catalog. I am going to order them cause I think they are going to be HOT!
I can’t decide on size 14 or 12, so I guess I will order both.
What do you guys and gals think?

Fly Goddess: Looks like that would be a good fly for those whitefish that abound in Utah’s rivers.
Tim Anderson, ex Utahn
That too, but in the Provo, (and I guess all rivers) Sow bugs are their main everyday diet and these look chewy. I am excited to try them.
Looks like a good one. On a recent trip to Wyoming to fish the snake I learned that the Orvis flies are tied overseas and that kind of scared me. Not sure if that information was accurate (but it was an Orvis guide that told me) and I am no trying to sound like I am out to save the world, but the idea of sweat shop fly tying makes me uncomfortable. Other than that, looks like a great pattern.
I don’t think they carry them in #14.
look simple enough that an untrained ape could prolly tie some.
I don’t want to get into an export discussion, but I was thinking about this this morning. What about our Computer, most cars, cameras, micro waves, TV, etc…
I understand the sweat shop thing and I am sure it could be very much a possibility. Something I must admitt I don’t think about when buying flies, cause lets be honest, the majority do come from China or Korea (Asian).
We did it to ourself and there is NO way we can live without import.
Look at our country, the Mexican’s are the ones in my opinion in the sweat shop, cause they will take any job regardless of pay. That too we did to ourself.
GOD BLESS AMERICA for sure. ALWAYS!
Sorry, didn’t mean to get POLITICAL and I appologize.
But what are they made of?
I’m almost certain I’ve seen this pattern someplace
for latex. CRS is working overtime. Warm regards,
Jim
Flygodess, I couldn’t agree with you more, we couldn’t live without imports. However, my only concern would be that this is piece work.
But, that is another topic all together. I think they are probably tied with larva lace or some of that sheeting used to tie scud backs. At least that is what it look like to me.
it would appear to be a latex type material. you might be able to get away with some d rib?
orvis used to have the recipes on their site…
I was thinking that rubbery sticky stuff they make gummy minnows out of. I have some and I will try it, but I get flies for a great price for my guiding and this one caught my eye. I was even thinking putting a black stripe down the back for a scud.
You are right that 12 is the smallest, but that is okay.
Hope it works better than the latex grub…
There’s a good reason why you don’t see those around anymore
Could be right, Very good point, but I GOTTA TRY! LOL
It looks to me like the fly is “tied” by wrapping a thin strip of pearl sili-skin (like used in gummy minnows) in partially overlapping wraps. Probably there is some lead underneath to provide weight and bulk.
Keith
Looks like a c*n_om worm tied on a scud hook to me.
MM,
I felt similarly about imported flies from third world countries, until an importer enlightened me to the fact that ANY job is better than the poverty experienced in some of these countries where jobs simply do not exist. Plus, most of those countries don’t have a Welfare system like we have, and these people are more than willing to make enough money to be able to put food on their tables on a regular basis. He asked me when the last time was that I experienced true hunger…had to admit to never! We forget that the poverty level here is a fortune somewhere else.
I still like to buy USA whenever possible, but he did give me pause to think differently about the subject.
Joe
I agree with kjgallaher. It looks like a wrapped strip of sili-skin to me.
Diane
If clear sili-skin is available it could be a good idea to wrap the underbody using pearlescent mylar for reflectiveness.
It looks like you could shake this fly and it would jiggle like jelly. Very nice asthetics.

it looks simple enough to tye
i Make a pretty good waxie imatation with some cream color yarn and black tying thread . After you tie it up take a lighter and run it over the body to singe the hair then coat the head with cement.
I would think you could use latex strip or vinyl ive also used plastic hair tyes you might have to cut them in half depending on there width .
or perhaps dub a body and use a strip from a plastic bag and rib it with some 2 lb fishing line .
as for a hook use a cadis hook that has a slight bend.
