New Kayak in Barn

i have just purchased and ultimate 12 kayak. It’s sitting in the barn on the floor and seems to be very stable when I get in. I guess I’ll have to test it out in the water. Now, what I would like to know is, when I go out for a days fishing on a nearby lake or river, what should I bring along other than the items listed.

fly rod
PFD
safety flag
paddle

I truly envy you. That’s the kayak I have been looking at as well as the freedomhawk14. Something quick, get in the water and fish. I am no expert on kayak fishing by any means but I have done it. The only thing I would add would be some type of anchoring system to keep you in place. Even in a light wind it will blow you around, not much, just enough to cause you to reposition all the time.

I borrowed a friends one day and did it open up my eyes to all the posibilities. Paddled away from the rest of the bobber crowd and did quite well on fish that probably have not seen any fishermen. I really need to get off my butt and get one!

fly rod holder
tow rope
pump (with float) for pumping out water that will splash over the bow if you don’t have a bow spray skirt (although you will need the pump eventually even if you do have a bow skirt) - these are also great for water fights
bailing sponge
dry bag
sun tan lotion
drinking water
first aid kit
some states require: safety whistles and strobe lights (you should carry them on a kayak even if your state does not require them)
lights in case you are caught out after dark
I also use carabiners attached to rings for securing gear, such as tackle bags, dry bags (for dry clothes)

The Ultimate is a great boat - you’ll have a lot of fun with it!

Good choice (I think!). I’m currently torn between the Tarpon 140 and the Ultimate 14.5. The Ultimate would allow me to stand, as well as possibly take the dog along. The Tarpon would allow me to potentially fish in slightly higher waves and wind without worrying about swamping. Still undecided at this point.

Nice boat, post pictures!

I just bought a native ultimate 12 also. I went to my local paddle shop on the demo days, and test drove the WS Tarpon 120, the Moken feel free 14ft., and the ultimate 12. The ultimate was head and shoulders above them all. I almost fell asleep in the seat it was that comfortable.

Thanks for the input. Hadn’t thought about a dry bag or carabiners. I the sponge mentioned somewhere else in anarticle,so I shall pick one up. Thanks again. HL

The boat came with an anchor and some rod holders for spin casters. So i have the anchor. Now I need a rod holder for a fly rod. Thanks for the input. HL

Add a number of pad eyes to attach gear with clips and carabiners. It’ll keep you organized which helps when you’re fishing. I’ve had an Ultimate 12 for two years and love it. We paddle ponds, lakes, and rivers…two of my buddies liked mine so much they each bought one and sold their old boats.

Don’t forget your pfd and first aid kit.
