New guy with paddling question

I’m new to this site and fly fishing. So new that I have not been fly fishing yet. I really enjoy this forum. I have two questions:

  1. Has any one built and user a B & B Yatch Designs “Birder” for fly fishing? Here is the wed site address:

http://www.bandbyachtdesigns.com/bird.htm

If I ask how do you think it would work I will have three questions so I won’t ask…

  1. I don’t see any talk on this forum about inflatable Pontoon boats. Least I haven’t yet, is that taboo on this forum?

Thanks.

I built a canoe/pirque(pee’row) for free plans and fished it alot if you want the plans I will email them to you.It takes 2 sheets of 1/4 plywood and a jig saw to make.It is called stitch and glue constuction and it floated me real well and me and the wife fairly well though somewhat over weighted.
This site has lots of free plans and tutorials.

A friend of mine who I often fish with ecently bought a Grumman Sportboat (aluminum), but came on to the idea by looking at self building boat plans. Here he came accross some plans offered by a Georgia boat builder (who has since passed on) -

 Hey shortleader,
This area of the forum is open to all paddlecraft folk, reguardless of the type of craft. Inflatable pontoons are as welcome as inflatable kayaks. We can all learn from each other. FAOL is a very open forum, unlike some others I have been to that get taken over by one type of craft or another. These other sites usually sit around typing about which is better sit-inside or sit on top kayaks and don’t get much talking done about fishing. So when you are here feel free to talk about the use and rigging of your pontoon craft.
Sarge.

Yes Inflatable pontoons , tubes and any boats besides sit-on-top kayaks are taboo on this forum. Really

 Okay, I give.

 Okay, I give.[/quote]

Of course I was kidding you. Jim Hatch has the final say on letting people that fish from shark doughnuts post here

Hey Shortleader,

Obviously Flytyer is just yanking your chain. Hope it isn’t attached
to your air valve.G Any paddleboat, toon, tube, yak, canoe, or
whatever they call the Louisiana versions of the same are of interest
to us. Anything that gets us in range of our quary in our various
fisheries is what it’s all about.

In these parts those things aren’t shark feeding rings, they are gator
baiters.G Warm regards, Jim

I knew flytyer was having fun. No problem.

I went ahead and ordered the plans for the Birder to add to my collection of plans for boats I am going to build someday. I also have the freebee plans. I’ve had then dor some time.

Thanks for the responses.

Here is another web site for free plans to build an 18’ Canoe, but it also has plans for purchase. Apparently, the purchase plans have some great ideas.

Little late with this -

I’m currently starting a pair of Birders in my shop. One is for my wife to use for photography of birds and other wildlife for her paintings.

The other will be for me to use to fish from. I fish the back lakes and saltwater sloughs around the Texas coast, both with conventional tackle and fly rods.

I tried a Birder while we were at a sailing rendezvous in P’cola this spring. Very nice little boat. You can call Graham, the designer, for one to one discussions on any mods you’d like to make. He’s quite available to any of his builders. Of course, the next several weeks he won’t be cause he’s heading down under for a while:)

I’ve built three of his designs so far- one for myself ( a dinghy for our sailboat) and two larger sailboats for customers. Will be starting a 20 footer for another customer as soon as I get our Birders “3 D” as we say.

At any rate- built to specs, the Birder should run under 40 pounds, be quite stable, as far as kayaks are concerned and easy to handle. I’m thinking of modifying the cockpit slightly for more gear storage aft of the seat. Not much-- just enough to fit something like a milk carton in there.

Further on the subject of the 13 Birders- here’s a pic of the two I started Thursday night a week ago. They are now glassed on the bottoms and will soon be getting interior and deck work done. Hope to be paddling with in another 10 days. Each one currently weighs under 24 pounds-

How about this plan?

The website has lots of plans.

Have fun.

mtb4jc, beautiful canoe. Did you build it? I have the plans for a strip canoe in my collection of plans. I will build one someday.

Charlie, been following your progress on the messing-about forum. I have Birder plan #75. Will be starting it this winter soon as I get the D%^$ minicup done. It is moving along though.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Kewl!! Ours are #73 and #74

Got the decks all trimmed, edges rounded and the decks epoxied today. Tomorrow I’ll sand that and put the final coat of Epoxy on the decks. Carlins, coamings, and paint and varnish and I’M gonna go find some redfish!!

I’m behind my hoped for schedule because it took 12 days for some fasteners to get here- US parcel post must be using pony express. Also behind because the Core Sound 20 for my customer keeps getting in the way  damned paying work getting in the way of my fun!!

Watch B and B forum- the CS 20 went 3D today.

Tnis was last night on the Birders- the CS 20 is the panels on the floor.
