New Bamboo Rod

I am in the planning stages of crafting a bamboo flyrod for myself and son.

I want to use good materials and blank as this will be a rod to pass down to my son.

On fire here got the go from the wife
just a minute ago… Have had the desire
for many years.

I am not ready to hand plane one just yet, so I need to know of a good source for the blank as well as everything I will need to get it done, Tools, jigs, hardware, ect…

Like it to be a 5wg. Can I get some input on a good blank to start with and any other assistance would be welcome and appreciated.

I am open on a price range right now.

Yes I am doing research , just thought I would also put a line out here to see what I may catch.

I am off to look at various books on the subject. I have John Gierach book Bamboo
a very good read.

Thanks!

Steve;
You don’t mind if tag along on this thread too? I’m interested in building a boo rod!

Jack,

Good to have someone along for the ride.
Lets see how it goes, thanks for the input thus far JC & tyflier I am all over it.

I will also keep you posted on my progress!

Hey Steve,

Just a suggestion. Some of the cane
guys can address it with more authority than
I. There are any number of budding cane
artists on the scene now and a number of
them are more than willing to produce just
blanks. I’d suggest logging into chat on
cane night and discussing it with some of
the builders. Might pick up a good
recommendation for a blank as well as get
some sound advice on hardware and such.
Good luck. Warm regards, Jim

Check with dleo6446 on this board…Leo has built cane rods & I’m waitin’ to get my vintage boo back that Leo restored. Pix he sent are fantastic!! Leo’s an ol’ ARMY BUDDY…1966!..Who’s gettin’ old,him or me???
Mike

Small sample: Quality blank only, no epoxy on thread wraps, need good source of heat call or email for help ect, ect, ect…

My printer is working overtime tonight.

Take care!

Check out Mark Fitch’s blanks. He sells a lot of them on e-bay - fitchm57. Very nice blanks, and very reasonably priced.

Check out the rods from Mike Brooks - great guy to work with - super nice rods - fair price - you can order anything from blanks with or without ferrules, reel seats, guides, handles, rod tubes, blued hardware, impregnated "Permacane’ - there is a lot of positive info on Mikes work - whoever gets one of his rods is getting a beautiful rod - email for more details - I own three and our TR org rod building class has built out 8- everyone has high praise for Mike’s work - he has been mentioned and recommended on this site before

Mike Brooks is excellent but around $400.00.Mark Fitch’s are excellent also but around $150.00. You can’t go wrong with either as I have bought several from both.

Chris,

Mike Brooks stuff looks very interesting,
I like the complete bamboo rod build kit idea…
