… on lakes and reservoirs in NW Colorado in a couple of weeks. After his elk hunt, a friend of mine is going to do some fishing in a reservoir near Steamboat and would like to know what to rig on his fly rod. He fishes the tailwaters here in Ark a lot but doesn’t know what to try up there. Any suggestions?
According to Marty Bartholomew’s book section on Steamboat Lake the “hatch” for now includes:
Crawfish/Streamers: Wooly buggers in #2-10, Black nosed dace #6-8, Muddler MInnow #4-10, various crawfish patterns #4-10
Midges: #16-22
Scuds: olive, orange, tan #12-16
He notes it is mostly rainbows with a few Cutts. He prefers the west side of the lake near stream entrances.
