Hi guys. today I pulled my trusty old montague rapidan 3 piece outa the closet only to find that it has a bad curve to one side. It seems to turn at angles though, right at the ferrules. The tip itself does seem to have a bow to it, but the ferrules do seem to be off. Is this possible? or is it more likely to be the boo bowing. How do I straighten this out?

The bamboo may not be set in the ferrule properly.Wether the glue softened up or the ferrule is worn I’d have them checked and reset or replaced.I would not cast this rod until it is repaired as its a good spot for a break.

Your Montague can be fixed - just need someone to do it for you. Sounds like a little heat and body english will do just fine. Someone on the above site should be able to point you in a good direction.
One other thing I was wondering. If I do remove the ferrules, there seems to be a small dot that could be a pin. is this a pin to hold the ferrule in place or is this an orientation mark for aligning the sections. The dot does correspond to the guides. I told you guys I’m a Boo newbie! I guess I really should know more about them to own them! LOL

But!! the good news is all is fixable!!
I ready your post and the answers over at Clarks as well. It appears from what you are saying however that you have a tip with a very slight set and a ferrule that may hve come loose or have been reset at sometime and the bend is actually at the joint of the ferrule moreso than in the set of the section itself!!
In order to correct it, you will need to remove the ferrule and yes, it is pinned. you cannot get the pin out! forget it! You will have to drive the pin into the bamboo then heat and remove the ferrule being cautious to not overheat it. I have seen them come off like a rocket and they could do some damage if pointed in the wrong way. Once you get it off, you will have to clean the ferrule station, check the fit of the station into the ferrule, then, if you do not have access to a lathe, you will need to put the male ferrule into the female ferrule, then put the tip section into the ferrule without glueing it, then sight to see if you have it straight. If NOT then keep rotating the ferrule until you get the straightest fit possible, and using a sharpie, mark the location of the ferrule to the tip section. Now glue that ferrule to the top section and make sure that you have your witness marks aligned.
it is much easier to do with a lathe for sure but tons of ferrules have been installed straight without one! You can do it HB, from the looks of the rod you built, you can do it and make her look great!! good luck!!\LD
Sounds like the answers I need! One question though. Should I straighten the bow of the boo first before tackling the ferrule?

Absolutely, it isn’t that hard to do, just take your time, and like mentioned on Clarks…don’t overheat it or you could make 6 strips out of 1!!
it’s all about patience, that is why some days, I don’t even want to get close to bamboo!!
