My buddy, John McFarland, has started a canoe trip down the Mississippi river, starting at Lake Itasca, MN. He is doing a photo/journal blog on facebook as Johnny Mac’s Mississippi River Adventure.
He has canoed the Colorado river and the Columbia as well as other rivers. He just turned 64 in May. He just passed Bemidji, MN. Jim
Jim, if he intends to travel the length of the Mississippi River this summer, he is going to need to get a move on. I wish him well but could not wish to venture on the parts of the Mississippi I am familiar with in that small of a boat. I have heard lots of tails about the currents in the river and I have seen quite large barge trains being pushed up and down.
Uncle Jesse, He is having a bad weather start and is about 100 miles behind right now. He might have to break it up like he did the Columbia. He made it in two attempts. Don’t know if you clicked on the link or not.Johnny Mac’s Mississippi River Adventure. Some of his portages takes him around and downriver past some of the more precarious waters. Jim
I don’t know how many of you are following this trip but I should report that John has quit. After only 200 miles in 2 weeks, numerous rainstorms , mosquitos, ticks and being uncomfortable in his new canoe, he has decided to go home. Jim
Yea that’s a tough thing to do, we used to do a 60 mile 3 day trip in our kayaks and your ready to be off the water by the end of it. Can’t imagine a canoe is that much more comfortable
