My first real try at a Buford

It’s on the smaller side, about 11” tip to tip, and with an intentionally smaller head to help get it down better.

It swims well, and I’m pretty happy with it.

Does that length cause a lot of short strikes? I blew up the picture and don’t see any sign of a stinger hook.

Great question worth an answer.

It doesn’t. Musky and pike are not tail nippers and tend to either hit the head of flies, or T-bone them.

Bass are generally the same way.

I’m pretty strongly anti-trailer hooks on bass, pike and musky flies because they have a tendency to get stuck way down a fish’s throat, or into the gullet or gills.

I tend to avoid even flies with two hooks, and any thing past the mid-point on flies I buy gets cut off.

The fly worked well today:

…and I lost a 40+.

Pretty good day for late season.
