My 2010 fishing report thread

Well my first trip in 2010 was supposed to be a great trip. Sometimes things just don’t work out the way you intend though. The plans were simple take two of my friends out and fish the same river that I fished last Sunday ( http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/showthread.php?t=32999 ).

I was woken up not by my alarm but by a horrible cramp in my calf. You know the type where you go from a dead sleep to jumping out of bed. I guess that was the first sign of how the day was going to go. After I took care of the cramp I turned off my alarm as it was going to go off in 10 minutes and started to get ready.

When I was getting ready I heard the tell tale sound of a new text message from my cell phone. It was Jeremy saying that he couldn?t make it. This was because he forgot to pick up his 2010 license. This should have been clue 2 as how the day was going to turn out.

Since it had been snowing all day I decided to take my 4x4. I headed out to Chris’s house to pick him up. We loaded up the truck and headed out. The freeway was in pretty bad shape; normally I drive 80-85 going there. However with the conditions I was doing around 50 (the speed limit is 75).

We got to our exit and stopped for some breakfast; we ate quickly and headed out. I noticed that we burned through a lot more gas then we should have. I took a look and found out why, my wife left the vehicle in 4 wheel auto (there is no visual queue to let you know it is in this setting).

As we made our way up the road the conditions went downhill and I had to put the vehicle into 4 wheel high. You could not see the road at this point so navigation was done by using the snow markers on either side of the road.

We made it to the turnoff and headed down into the canyon. When I first pulled off the road I stopped and put the vehicle into 4 wheel low as the conditions warranted it. On our way down it was pretty hard to make out where the road was. I was starting to think we should just turn around when I saw a plow ahead. Sweet I thought to myself and I followed the plow down the hill.

The plow turned off on top of the dam and I went by. Driving over the dam and down the second road I saw another plow. Chris said that they had to keep the road open because it is the only way into Prairie. We kept driving towards our first fishing spot of the day.

We made it to the first run we wanted to fish. A feeling of relief came over me as we had made it. I did overshoot the run by a little bit so I decided to turn around. We were on our way back up to the run when it happened. I did not see a drift on the right side of the road. Yes I managed to get stuck.

It took us two and a half hours of digging, rocking, using the floor mats for extra traction to get out. I remember hitting the gas and feeling the tires grab and pull me back up onto the road (The truck had slid a bit off the road during the course of trying to get out). Looking at the hole where I got out of I couldn?t believe it. That thing was about 2.5’ deep. I parked in the middle of the road and got wadered up.

Forget this I am going fishing I said to Chris. I had not seen another car or plow all morning on this section so I decided just to leave my vehicle in the middle of the road. I made my way down to the water and began to fish. It was not long until I got my first take.

I set the hook and it was fish on. I fought this bow and got him close enough to see. He was not a monster or anything but was nice. I went to net him and he popped off. Darn! I don’t believe it I thought to myself. I resumed fishing. I ended up LDRing every other fish I hooked that day. I did get a few close enough to see and most of them were bows. I did see one whitefish in there.

I don’t know if I was flustered or what but I could not land a frickin fish to save my life that day. Chris did not do much better either. The only fish he landed was a 24" sucker. Chris was starting to freeze and said that he wanted to go. By this time it was two in the afternoon. Personally I wanted to stay but it is no fun being out on the river if your feet and legs are freezing.

We headed back home not really saying much. As we drove back we laughed as we passed a police roadblock. Yes they had actually closed the highway that we took to get there. This must have happened after we had gone through. It makes sense though as it literally had snowed hard all that day too. For those of you asking about the lack of pics in this report I will say this. Yes I took the camera but I was a bit too flustered to actually take any pics at all.

Yes, but…

  1. You got out of the house
  2. You got to go to the water
  3. You got your string jerked by fish
  4. It helped the “shack nasties”

and if the truth was known…

  1. You still enjoyed yourself and you did get to go fishing…

A gem of a report, for sure.

Like who needs a camera and pics to totally enjoy your day out ?? Quite the adventure, for sure.

Glad you got out and got your report filed. Makes getting skunked two times in a row up here a lot easier to take.

John

P.S. If you use this report as the beginning of a continuing thread for all your outings in 2010, we can continue to enjoy how the adventure started and relive it for the ages !!

Well now that I had a chance to relax a bit I am actually kind of laughing about the whole day.

I would use this as my 2010 report thread, but I can’t seem to change the thread title. I tried in the advanced edit function but it did not change it.

I think an admin can change the title of a thread.

I was wanting to do that to my Pecos thread as well, same thing.

sounds like a helluva day there. Up where I was in Pecos on the first I got stuck twice in the snow but I am used to it now and have all the proper “getting your two wheel drive truck unstuck” equipment:

  1. Lots of sand tubes
  2. shovel
  3. chains
  4. fire starting material and Jack Daniels (in case all others fail)

The worse thing about it is I am getting stuck in like 3" of snow.

It’s pretty pathetic…

It seems to me most of your days on the water are quite a bit different - so this is a great title for your continuing thread.

By the time we throw FIVE STARS on it, and people get to following it, who’s going to notice the title, anyway ??

OR, you could just start a new thread with the title you want, and copy this report in as the first post ??

John

I see that the thread title was changed so I will put all my reports here.

Great report. It’s the days that we only enjoy fully much later that make for the best stories. And, with the passing of time, you’ll have landed most of those fish anyway!

Sasha, I’m still alternating between laughter and the shakes. I’ve been there and had that sinking feeling in the gut of ‘what if we can’t get out?’. Glad it turned out well. Now that you’ve got the ‘stink’ off, all future trips should be the best! Looking forward to this thread in the coming year.

Kelly.

Not a report but I thought that I would add this to my thread.

So this weekend is my 7th year wedding anniversary. My wife asked me a while back what I wanted for our anniversary. At first I wasn?t sure what I wanted, but then I found something. I let her know I found what I wanted. When I returned home from Salt Lake yesterday it had already arrived. Now technically I was the one that contacted the seller etc. but it is the thought that counts. Well here is what I ended up with (sorry the pic is not the best, but the lighting was bad).

Sweeeeet. Don’t you just love those that love us?!

Kelly.

Congratulations on the rod, err, ahem, aaah, wedding anniversary, Sasha.

Holy Moly - what a great small stream rod that is going to be. Can’t hardly stand the wait to see the pics of the water you fish it on and the fishies that come out to play with the flies you fish with it.

John

very nice stick. you are going to really enjoy that!

Thanks everyone!

I cant wait to get out and play with the SLT. For some odd reason I have a feeling it will be just like my 0wt SPL

Honestly I wish Sage would bring back the SPL or SLT as they are (IMO) better rods than the TXL. Don’t get me wrong I have fun with my TXL 000wt, but it is not the finesse rod that my SPL is.

I decided to christen my new rod on a little river that I have not fished since last October.

The day started off not too early when my alarm woke me up at 0600. I got out of bed (after hitting snooze a couple of times), and started to get ready. Today I was fishing alone so I was not in any huge hurry so I took my time. I finally left my house about an hour later.

It was fairly cold this morning, which was evident in the amount of ice on my car windows. It was still dark as I started my journey to the river. After a quick stop at Jack for a breakfast burrito and hash browns I was on my way. After a while I started to get close to my destination.

Although it was pretty light, the sun still had not come up by the time I reached the river. I got out of the car and got geared up. I was pretty excited to try my new rod and hopefully get some browns. After all the cute pics of browns I have seen lately I wanted to go get some too.

I made my way to the spot I wanted to fish and began to cast. It did not take long before I got my first strike. I fought this fish for a little bit, just when I thought I had him he popped off. I resumed fishing and not long after I got another strike. I set the hook and it was fish on. I fought this fish, landed him and returned him to the river.

Then I decided to go check out another run. Just like the first run it did not take long to get a strike. I ended up LDRing this and the next guy. I ended up landing the next few, so I did not feel too bad.

I decided to go back to the run I fished when I first got there. This ended up being a good decision. The fish were on and I had what they were keying on. I had an absolute blast; these guys were a treat to catch. After a little while I decided that it was time to call it a day.

I made my way back to the car, got out of my boots and waders, and took my rod down. I did have a fun day even though I was fishing a tailwater  . I did not take a lot of pics on this trip; I hope you enjoyed the report.

Nice, nice fishies! Good way to break in a new rod.

Curious how colored up they still are. I am used to seeing fish like that in October and into November, but by now, ours down south here are clean and the scars from spawning have healed, although they are still a bit skinny from all that hard work.

Looking forward to more nekkid fish pictures.

That must have been an absolute blast catching those mean looking browns on that new 0 wt rod, and those are some good sized fishies.

Great set of pics. The scenery shot with the creek in the foreground and the high bluffs in the background ( sixth pic ) is outstanding.

Lookiing forward to another report soon.

John

Sasha, nice post and excellent fish. I recognize those spots and have fished them also. What a great river and what phenomenal fish it holds! Thanks for sharing.

Kelly.

Thanks guys!

To answer some of the questions: Most all the fish were a little worn out looking and still were showing “battle” scars.

The SLT was fun. I know some frown on the practice of fishing ultra light rods but I wont go down that road (all fish were landed quickly). I will say that thowing a weighted triple nymph rig under an indicator is not my favorite way to fish my 0wt rods.
