I found a couple of packs of Mustad Signature hooks and I was impressed with quality. I never really looked at them. Anybody else have any experience with them? The price sure is good.
I have some that I bought several years ago and I have been very happy with them. They have been sharp out of the box and seem as strong as about any other hook I have used. They are not as brittle as some other hooks that I have used also.

I use Mustad Signature hooks all the time. I tie a few hundred flies every year. Since we are not debating I’ll just say I prefer Mustad hooks in general.
I figured no one ever wins a hook debate so I just wanted to hear from people that use Mustad.
Excellent hooks in my opinion.

In researching them I think some of the hooks styles are excellent. Where do you do most of your ordering?
Mustad hooks of the past were not chemically sharpened, and in my opinion, that was their major downfall. The signature series is chemically sharpened, so they are much better than their past offerings. I’m a huge fan of them, and the C49S is arguably my favorite hook to tie with.
wish I could comment on the Mustad signature hooks, but I have way to many of the old Mustad hooks of all differnt models and sizes. I used to love the fly fishing shows years ago when they use to have barrels of Mustads hooks for sale at great prices. #906, 3906B, 94720 and so on. Then switched over to buying them off E-bay and finally have 8 hooks boxes filled with hooks. I will say this, I always used Mustad and loved them, so I expect nothing different from their new line. I do know the hooks are sharper.
For Soft Hackles the S82 (3906B) Is my favorite. The S80 (3906) is second. For nymphs the R73 (9671) is the one I use the most.
For eggs and Caddis pupa, the C67 Is my favorite hook.
my preference is Mustads first, unless I’m in a hurry in which case I will buy TMC
The vast majority of the hooks I use are Mustads. Both the signature series and some of the older stock are still in my inventory of hooks. I’ve got a few other name brands and off brands but Mustad represents the bulk of my supply and I don’t expect that to change anytime. If I can, I always try and use Mustad as my default choice.

You tie your nymphs on them?
I tie several patterns on the C49S. Makes a good nymph and works well for “spider” style wets. Might call them soft hackles. I also like the 3906B.
When I was tying for a number of shops years ago the hooks that I used were all Mustad.
Never had a hook fail and never a complaint from the shops or fly customers.

I have tied a fair bit on Lazer Trokar hooks, and they are probably the best big game hooks I have used. Some of the Eagle claw laser point hooks aren’t bad, but their fly specific hooks are pretty terrible. My issue is that in fly fishing you need a really sharp hook to set the hook because of the minimal pressure that a fly rod can exert while setting the hook (compared to a stiff bait caster…) Chemically sharpened, conical points are the way to go (Tiemco, Daiichi, Allen, Gamakatsu, Mustad Signature, etc etc.)
