More on Knots

This is what I’ve come up with re: knots…based alot on a couple of articles by Art Sheck, threads on the forum, and

Some general statements…

Notice I didn’t say based on experience…

The clinch knot tends to be weak as does the surgeons…both of which I’ve used alot probably because of their simplicity…but I’m going to change.

Don’t know how these apply to heavy duty salt-water fishing…

LINE TO LEADER:
Albright
Nail
Needle Nailess Nail… my choice

Loop to Loop if you like that system

LEADER TO TIPPET:
Ligature …nylon
Orvis tippet knot…fluoro

TIPPET TO FLY
Orvis knot
Pitzen[16-20]
Davy knot

Non-slip mono loop …in some situations

Interesting site.
This spring, I started using the Orvis knot for my leader/tippet connection and the Davy or a non-slip loop knot to tie on the fly, and I had multiple breakoffs of the tippet. I switched back to a 3 turn surgeon, which may be bulky, but I have never had fail, that I can remember.

I like the Davy knot more and more. It is simple, and gives right away if not right. I will have to try it in the salt before I pass final judgement–blues, drum and spanish mackeral pull harder than bass and bluegill. I may stick with the Trilene in salt water.

Right now I’m using the uni for fly to line and blood knot.

That is exactly the issue addressed by the Art Scheck articles…see Nov/Dec 04 & Jan/Febr. 05 American Angler…

Non-slip loop knot…and I don’t have problem with the knot failing. It’s fast becoming the knot of chronie and nymph fishermen for stillwaters up this way.

Note that there is a difference between the “Orvis knot” and the “Orvis tippet knot”.
