Been doing a bit of tying. Nothing classic. First up. I had decent luck with large mop flies for bass in 2019. The virus and a bad knee(recently revised/replaced) kept me off the water this year. Looking forward to 2021. Thought I’d add a marabou tail to a fly that has decent action already
And keeping with the mop fly theme. I used a single piece of foam to float some of them. I’ve caught trout and pan fish on them. This year I’m going to try a booby type head and see if it makes a difference
Something different for me. I’ve never really messed around with cased caddis but when I found the “bodies” next to the dental floss. I think I was suppose to brush my teeth with them. Maybe the trout will think they’re cased caddis bouncing along the bottom.
The cased caddis look edible. Was white the only color "large’ mop fly you used for bass? Hope 2021 is a better year for you and your fishing. I myself was a south Jersey boy (Camden county) and frequently went to Philly. Almost forgot to ask; do you fish the ‘large’ Mop Fly on the surface or is it weighted. I didn’t know if you had some foam up in the area of the eyes or not
That one has the foam dumbbell head. I found that white, yellow and chartreuse worked best for top water Here’s some of the first batch. I plan to replace the single foam piece with the foam dumbbell/booby head.
For the weighted ones I took some colors from plastic worms. Black and olive for leeches, Olive and Orange for crayfish. Red for aquatic worms. White, yellow and chartreuse for bait fish.
