Mitch?s Bobbin Whirler Al Beatty

An email notification for Hatches Mag. just arrived. In it I found the article listed.

This bobbin has interested me before and I’m wondering if it facilitates rotary tying?

I felt if one was tying a dubbing loop and tying rotary the advantage of the whirler probably is lessened. For example,
I’ve thought that half hitching and hanging the bobbin on the holder makes “dodging the bobbin” a non issue but of course mandates more maneuvers.

I’d like to hear from Al and others on this.

Hi,

When using the Twirler I don’t think tying rotary or non-rotary makes that much difference. When tying rotary you still have to “dodge the bobbin” OR “do something with it” like placing it on a bobbin rest. I’ve used the Twirler quite a bit over the last several weeks and founnd it helps my rotary tying about as much as it help my non-rotary tying.

By the way, I was so taken with the Twirler that I bought 24 of them, 12 for me and 12 for Gretchen. And to answer the next question, “No I don’t sell them, I’m just a satisfied customer.” Take care & …

I was interested in your pointing out about returning your grip to the home position…or however you called it…made me wonder if a worthwhile modification would be a thumb or finger depression???

Hi ducksterman,

I hadn’t thought about the “finger indent” but it would be interesting to see. I found myself using the space between the slider hook and the bobbin as a kind of “feeler point” to find the “home position” if that makes any sense to you. I suppose an indent would do something similar and IF it were placed in the same position on each Twirler (in relation to the direction the hook is facing) it would certainly help identify "home."Take care & …

Hi, Al!
I purchased the Bobbin Whirler a couple of weeks ago and really like it. I don’t have all the tricks down yet (like forgetting to lower the hook after using it and then tying down the loop with the hook still up. Boy, does that cause a mess!) but I am enjoying learning. One problem I am having is getting used to the extra long tube on the Bobbin Whirler. Do you know whether or not they plan on coming out with version that has a shorter tube? That would make it easier to use (at least for me) for the bobbin’s normal uses when you’re not using the hook.
Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,

I don’t know about the shorter bobbin you mention. Quite frankly the 24 I bought from them I had special made on an extra-long bobbin because that is the size Gretchen and I are used to tying with. Take care & …

Thanks, Al. I appreciate it and all of the information you are so kind to teach us and let us in on.
Joe

I got my whirler a couple of weeks ago. I like tying with herl, this really simplifies the wrapping. The included DVD really helped me.
