These little guys are easy to tie and very effective all year round here in Central Florida. I tie them on a size 4 Mosquito hook with small dumbbell eyes. I use about 2” of Pine Squirrel zonker for the tail and crystal chenille or Estaz for the body. They’re small enough to cast easily with my 4 wt, but you’d better hang on because big bass also find them very attractive, especially in the spring. I fish them both mid-water with quick six-inch strips or bounce them along the bottom to imitate small crayfish. Either way, they work great. Easy to tie with readily available materials and effective.

Rick,
My most productive Bluegill pattern is the black mohiar leech. I tie it on a size 10 2xl hook. A bit of black rabbit fur for the tail and black mohair yarn for the body. Super easy to tie and extremely effective. You can add a bead head or a couple of wraps of lead wire as an underbody to get the sink rate you want. Let me know if you’d like some black mohair yarn to tie some of these up.
