General use of surface midges/gnats run anywhere from 16-24. General use of midge emergers run from 12-24. I’ve used beadhead midges from 10-24. (The smaller ones I buy because I don’t have the fingers or the eyes anymore that can tie something that small and still match what those young eyes and nimble fingers can do.)
I see nothing wrong with a 14. They work for the trout here.
I’ll now take these tired, aging muscles and limp off to make a pot of coffee…
I agree with Diane, I just received the Midge’s from Bassman and they are truely amazing. Very tiny and just blow my mind the detail. I may have to venture into smaller flies and see if I can even come close to the perfection that he exhibits
Thanks for letting me stay in this swap. I Joined hoping to see some great patterns to give me inspiration to my tying this winter. I have been tying for under a year and will be venturing into small flies this winter in addition to drys. I fish very few drys and have always bought them as needed. I have had the need for tiny flies a few times this summer (first real season of fishing in ALberta) and when there is a need it’s time to learn to tie small flies.
With all the experience in this swap and on FAOL I know I’m in the right place to learn.
oh I agree, I have already learned so much from everyone on FAOL. I am so HOOKED on the fly swap. I am anxious to see your flies and am glad that you remained in the swap.
Hey CK… Please drop me a line with your mailing info…
Here’s a little info on the Fore & Aft…
I was first introduced to this midge on the Green River in Utah, simple and deadly. Often when trout are midging they will focus on clusters instead of individuals, this tie represents two midge’s locked together back to back and is tied in the #16 to #24 size range. On the Green there most often tied in the #20 & #22 size, I will be tying #20’s for the swap but simply tie to the size of midges in your area. Midge hatch’s go off year round on Tail Waters and the water is crystal clear, so clear this pattern will out produce a Gant hands down. Can be tied with a post for visibility or fished as a tailer behind a larger dry…
received flies from DianeID and also essobee today, You guys are making me feel guilty with how awesome these flies are. I may have to do alittle smaller midge.
Well my flys are tied and ready to go in the mail, will get them out on tuesday cause of the holiday. Hope they are ok only been tying a few months but I think they came out pretty good. Its a size 22 cream midge.
