Midgar Bomber DHH variation

It was a b.tch to spin deer hair on that substrate, so I cheated. October Caddis in this size; bigger iron for a salmonfly

hook – Mustad 94840 #8
thread/rib - UTC 140 burnt orange
tail - fox squirrel tail
butt/head - 2mm foam rust
body/hackle - deer hair dyed orange

Tail/butt/head sequence is the same as the traditional Midgar so we’ll skip those steps

Create a thread loop, wax; clean, stack, measure (1.5 gap width) a clump of deer hair; insert in clip, trim butts

Insert clip in loop, release, spin

Wet fingers, stroke fibers back, wrap hackle

Repeat as needed; half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Nice tie Scott. I can see doing this in different colors. Need to get going for Spring!

Midgar Bomber DHH II

Trimmed out the hair underneath, added a shoulder and indicator since it’s hard for me to pick out a dark fly on typical gloomy skwala days.

shoulder hackle - pheasant rump dyed olive

I tie a lot of bombers on salmon hooks in the 1/0 range for coho. They do not catch as many fish as other patterns, but they are almost always the most memorable fish of the day… A little foam might not be a bad idea for getting them to stay on top… and still look like a traditional fly.

ScottP,

Bombers are one of my go to patterns for smallmouth bass, let them skitter down-stream and across on a tightline and hang on.

I love this pattern with the added foam. Your solution of using the dubbing loop is brilliant. Spinning deer hair on foam is difficult - I would probably go with a bunch of stacked bunches but that adds to the tying time.
