The latest issue of Fly Tyer has a fly for smallmouth Bass that calls for Microfiber which has been cut in the form of a Crawdad claw. I haven’t had any luck in locating that or any other Chamois-like material. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Mike
Probably ought to read the article before answering…but it’s never stopped me before!
If it’s Chamois you’re looking for…try the car care department of WalMart. A huge piece of chamois for about $10.00. You’ll have plenty to tie flies for life, and still clean the car with what’s left over!
Trouts don’t live in ugly places
If you want to try a terrific product that is already pre-cut in the impressionistic shape of a pair of claws AND is available in lots of colors and three sizes; look for Kreel Klaws.
They have a small hole in them so all you have to do is slip them over the hook point and tie them down and you have INSTANT craw claws. They appear to be made of chamois or something like chamois but they stay soft and pliable. I use them along with Furry Foam, different chenille or Estaz, and lead eyes for a quick and simple craw that works great on smallies. Because they are so simple to tie I don?t despair too much if I lose a few fishing them low and slow in the river.
I got my Kreel Klaws from Cold Spring Anglers in Carlisle, PA:

As far as regular chamois goes; I had the best luck with thin chamois that I pre cut into a combo claws and over-back shape with a pattern I made from a 3 X 5 card. The best source of thin chamois I found is an eyeglass shop like Pearle Vision; they sell it to clean lenses. After cutting it to shape I colored it with permanent markers. But ever since I found Kreel Klaws I stopped bothering with chamois.
