I have a rules question for the refs of the 2-wt shoot-out. I am looking at getting a new rod (oh surprise) and I saw a sweet TFO 2-wt rod at a local fly shop. Ok, actually I made the mistake of mentioning, in aq fly shop, needing a 2-wt rod for this summer and they appeared all around, as if by magic. What are the rules going to be with regard to the rods themselves? Is there going to be any sort of limit on the length of the rod? Number of pieces? Etc…? I would like to know before I do anything too rash.
Is building a rod an option for you? I know you have above-average intelligence, so you can do this. H&H has the Tradition II 6’6" 2-piece 2wt for $54.95 + shipping. If you don’t want to build it, maybe you could coerce Jack or Warren to build it for you.
BTW, I have a Forecast 6’-6" 2-piece 2wt on the wrapping jig as we speak. Funny you should bring this topic up. Wrapping the guides and hook keeper with Magenta thread. Signature wrap will be Magenta with Gold intermediate wraps. I don’t even know why I have this rod in my inventory, since I have the 4-piece version already. This is what happens when you get drawn into this addiction.
Here’s the Forecast 6’-6" 2-piece 2wt I built for ohiotuber. I think I wrapped his with Candy Apple Red thread with Silver tipping.
…And a nice 2 wt it is!! (Thanks again Joe!) First fish I caught on it was a pretty wild mountain stream brookie in the Shenandoah Mountains with Tim Grubbs… I plan on going back this year!

I think we are having a “bring what you got” shoot out this year. Any rod, any weight.
I don’t want to stop you from getting a 2 wt…there too mutch fun not to have one.
Joe V., thanks for your kind, if misleading, words regarding my (alleged) intelligence. Luckily I don’t have space to add either rod building or leader furling to my fly fishing addictions. Lately, I haven’t even had time to tie flies. <whimper> (I’m still working on some for Crappie Cat).
I’ll probably think about that TFO a little more. I might even take it for a test ride, which is altogether too dangerous… Of course, the CC702 from Cabela’s has been whispering in my ear for a while. There are so many nice rods out there…
:mrgreen:Ed,
We discussed the “Shoot-Out” and the “Boomer” sugessted a “Run whot U brung” and we thought sounds good.
Of course as with all “Commitee” descisions this could change at any time.
Bill
That brackets it, then. I have the 7’ 1-wt Cabela’s Clear Creek. Last year, they wouldn’t let 1-wts play in the 2-wt shoot-out <sniffle>. Still, the 8’ TFO rod felt really good in my hand. I think I’ll have to think about this some more… Maybe I should take out a personal add in the Nashville Scene:
SWM seeks svelte, 2-wt rod for meaningful, long-term relationship. Must have tight bindings and good guides. Must like large and small streams and be good with trout and bream. Love handle must be cork.
