Medalist 1495 owners.

What size line do you like to put on them?
I’m trying to figure out where to spool some extra lines…I have a wf6 and a wf5 and some 1494’s and 1495’s.
Janus

Guess I’d put the 5 on the 94 and the 6 on the 95…don’t think it matters much…just a backing variation.

I have my 7wt lines on a 1494 1/2 and my 8wt lines on a couple of 1495 1/2
…The only 1495 I ever had, I gave away…I didn’t know what to do with it

Thanks for the replies…I’ll figure it out. The 1495 with a wf6 holds alot (too much for me) of backing. Might make a little cork arbor for it. I have been thinking about picking up a 1494 1/2 that might work. The 1494 holds a wf5 and a little but enough backing. I have put dt6 on the 1495’s up until now and that has worked out for me.
Janus

Janus, I’d be interested in why the backing would be too much for you?

Well I fish for smallmouth with a 6wt I have never had one take any line out. So, the dt6 was a solution because it also held about 50yrds or so of backing just in case… It seemed to me ,and I could be off, that with a wf6 the 1495 held close to 150yds+ of backing? I need the 1495 for the weight to balance the older glass rods and longer graphite…But,to my tastes, it seems to be to have too much capacity for a wf6 otherwise.

Janus, I was wondering if it was a $$'s issue…of course a larger line might be more optimal. You could do what I do just to fill a reel…buy very inexpensive regular dacron fishing line and fill the reel…only have to do it once.

It makes my arms tired winding it all on.ha! no it is really partially the money, and partially just not necessary for my situation. But thanks for mentioning the dacron fishing line I am going to look into it just to have around…I can’t stop buying old reels, and have alot of empty ones right now. Lonely empty reels.
Janus

Shops will be closing-out this season’s ice-fishing tackle soon.
The backing on many of my reels is dacron tip-up line that I picked up cheap

I use a DT7F and DT7I on my AK spools with 30# dacron for Stripers and other big warm water where I anticipated more than a hand-stripped fish.

Hello Janus, what if you fashioned some sort of arbor spacer so you wouldn’t have to use much backing? I’m thinking some kind of tape so there’s no slippage of backing and flyline.

Cheers,

MontanaMoose

You know I think I will try the arbor…here is a post from a really informative poster on another forum that caught my attention.

I can’t believe this…corks, arbors…etc… labor intensive …time spent gathering…and whatever…just use inexpensive fishing line that I mentioned….and you are done

Come on it’s fun to gather, tinker etc. At least for me. I just used a safety pin bent straight and upside down for a hookeeper on a 2wt I built…saved me 21 cents.
Janus

Janus, I think you just made my point;).

Having said that, I’m a believer in…just because that’s how I want to do it!

Hey Janus, duckersterman got me to thinking since like you,
I’m a tinkerer-gatherer, what if you put two flylines on the 1495…
one old 3wt…as much of it as you’d need to
cause the 7wt line to fill the spool.

Cheers,

MontanaMoose

I use my 1495’s for 8-weight and 9-weight lines. Smaller than that I use a 1494.

duckster ha! I think we are on the same page with this.
