McCaskie's Green Cat

I am sure I saw a mention of this fly recently on this BB, but I can’t
find what string. So! here is my take on the fly.

Hi Donald,

I can’t view those two pictures here, as they just show up as a red X. I clicked on your link, and you have the wrong type cat listed for the dubbing. It should be fur from a Russian Blue cat, not Persian. Here’s my attempt at this fly from almost two years ago useing the dubbing that I just wrote above dyed in picric. The fly is not as nice as your tie’s, but this was one of the first of that type that I tied, so I’ll use that as a lame excuse.

Mark

Love the flies guys, great work!

Alas, my Russian Blue died several years ago and the hazmat team took the bottle of pyric acid (circa 1970) I found in the hall storage closet at work for disposal. What was I thinking?

Nice ties on both those flies!

Moscow,
I’m sorry about the loss of your cat. As for letting the hazmat team/bomb squad taking the picric acid, you might have been thinking that it is A) poisonous and B) can explode under certain circumstances. The Royal Artillery (among others) was fond of using it as a filling to make their shells go BOOM back in the earlier parts of the 20th century. I think I’ll eschew the use of picric acid in my fly tying.

Ed

Thanks EdD, not to worry - there are some things I don’t need in my tying area and a potential pyric acid BOOM is one of them. I was amazed at how carelessly it was stacked in with numerous other bottles of unknown chemicals when a lab was cleaned out to make way for a new faculty.

I thought I would tie one of these up as well. Had to improvise, and ended up using insect green seal’s fur for the dubbing, and snipe for the hackle. Looks ok though, and I’m sure it will see water; hopefully soon.
