Well, my computer is over 3 years old now so it’s starting to slow down. Sometimes it takes a long time just to load a link. My question here is, has anyone used one of those online computer cleaners like Max My Speed dot com? If so, were you satisfied with the outcome. My fear hear is that I might be releasing a lot of personal information to an online spammer or worse yet thief.
Joe, lets start with the basics, have you removed the cookies and defraged the hard drive?
Eric
i’m admin at an online free tech support web site. nobody that’s tried those “speed me up” apps has found any benefit. some will totally mess up a computer to the point of being unbootable. i can recommend a freeware application names Ccleaner. it’ll safely clean out many things that cause computer slowdown. another thing is to check for malware with Malwarebytes malware remover. Malwarebytes is free. another thing that helps a great deal is to run chkdsk and defrag.
Ccleaner is here:

MAlwarebytes is here.:

chkdsk and defrag are part of windows.
what version of windows do you have joe?
I have Windows Premium Home Vista. When I was using Windows 98 or XP, things were easier. But now I have Vista and it is supposed to defrag automatically every Sunday night. I miss XP, and I don’t think a lot of Vista. I wish I could afford Windows Seven just to get away from Vista.
I’m doing most of my job searching online and wonder if that has something to do with my 'puter slowing down.
Joe Not to insult you with this very basic stuff but lots of people take their puter to a shop and pay big bucks when really all they have to do to regain its speed is to clear out their temp files. A lot of people do not know that they should clear them out once in a while. Its very easy and only takes a few minutes. At the top of the screen click on " tools " Then click on “internet options” a drop down screen will appear with a delete section where you can delete your browsing history , this will speed up your computer. A 3 year old computer should not be getting slower.
Worse case scenario, back up all your personal stuff. Then format the hard drive, next reload the original programs that came with it . If that doesn’t return your computer to its original speed then its got some real problems. If you don’t know how to do any of that, its not really a problem as most computer geeks can do it for you.
As for the program you mentioned I haven’t checked it out because my puter is blazing fast anyway. I am on the cable which is very fast and reliable.
Thanks again Gnu Bee. I did what you suggested and seems to have helped. We’ll see…

Don’t pay for a program, get this program called Advanced System Care http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Free/3000-2086_4-10407614.html?tag=mncol;pop
buddy of mine showed it to me and it works great. When I first ran it and I checked the add/remove program section it showed that I still had part of Norton 360 loaded, which I uninstalled back when I first got my laptop over a year ago. It will also clean up all the empty registry key entrys from programs being deleted. Really cleans things up. Doing a Defrag is easier through your regular OS.
I really didn’t want Vista when I bought my laptop but I’ve changed all the views to Classic Windows views and it’s simple now.
