Manistee MI

I am going to be going to the flies only stretch on the Manistee (Michigan)next week to do some trout fishing. Having never been there would appreciate input from anyone familar with the area – What kind of fishing can I expect this time of the year suggestions for rod(s) and flies to have. Thanks Dave

I hate to tell you this but the river is/will be full of salmon. If you want to target trout your best chance is to fish the holes behind the redds with egg patterns though I have caught some trout on streamers in a similar situation on the White. To go after the salmon I use marabou streamers with a nine weight rod. Look for the lightest colored fish as they are the freshest and the only ones likely to take a fly. Or fish in front of or behind the redds for newly arrived fish that haven’t become fully engaged in teh spawning frenzy yet.

all leaders tangle; mine are just better at it than most. Jim

We’ve caught trout further up stream. 9 mile or 6 mile bridge, even Bear Track when the Salmon are in.

I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here!

Hi, Spike-2,

Although I’ve only fished that stretch in early spring, I can say that it was/is beautiful, and that it was so deserted then we even took our dog in good conscience. It is above the salmon, as has been said, and should be a great choice.

Best,
Kat
