Luricant instead of parafin wax

:?: Hi everyone, a little while ago someone mentioned a lubricant that they use on the rod pieces instead of coating them with parafin wax to make them eaiser to join and separate. Does anyone remember the name of that product and where to get it. I just became the owner of 2 new rods (wife saw the Redington deal on Sierra TP and surprised me with new 4wt and I just bought a new 6wt) and thought I’d use the lubricant instead of wax. Thanks…

it’s called ferrule lube, it’s for use on graphite ferrules. not good for nickel silver.

I prefer to use nothing. Well fitting ferrules need nothing and anything you put on them will only hold dirt which will damage the ferrule over time. In the case of loose ferrules plain paraffin is my choice , but cleanliness is critical.

The oil from the area around your nose it what I have used for many years. Easy and you have it with you at all times. I hope. Ron

fishnski,
Here’s the link to the product review for Ferrule Lube.

I just wish I could find something that makes cheap chrome covered brass ferrules fit a bit tighter. Good luck and…
God Bless,
Well I tried to post the link, but it comes up blank. I hope it works for you. If not, go to the Left Hand menu. Choose Features, then Product Features, then go about 1/2 way down the page. Look for Ferrule Lube. Good review!
Sorry the link didn’t work.
So, let’s try this one.

Thanks No-tye-much, I don’t know where I got that other URL

I mentioned using nose-grease on here once and nearly got trampeled in the rampage. I thought JC was gonna reach through my screen and choke me.

You know what? I think he was right about not using it. The oils, acids and salt on your skin will cause corrosion. It’s a better thing to use something without acidity or salt.

Also, make a habit of wiping your ferrules everytime you take the rod apart and they’ll last longer, nose-grease or not.

RonMt - I remember like it was yesterday. An old crotchty fly fisherman mentor who Gave me my first bamboo rod (which I still have) showed me how to oil the brass ferrule with nose oil. I thought at the time it was a joke. I guess I can count my self lucky, I have big nose and lots of oil. 50 years later, no joke, fact. The metal ferrule have not corroided to my knowledge, maybe it is the canola oil in my diet? I have a bee hive on my farm here in SE Michigan. I use bee’s wax for the spigot ferrules. Any one want some nice bees wax, send me an email. Good thread, Jonezee

Jonzee,
I don’t know if it’s good stuff or not. Probably is, as it’s all natural and non-adhesive. Bee’s wax can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. If they have a quality bow string wax, it’s most likely made of bee’s wax. I used it for over ten years and it worked great for protecting a bow string. If you rubbed your fingers along the string fast, you could get it to warm up and penetrate throughout the fibers of the bow string. I suppose rubbing it in your hands till it gets warm would cause it to penetrate those spigot ferrules more completely. Just a thought.

Lotech,
You need to right click on the link and select “copy link location”
doing so you get http://www.flyanglersonline.com/prorevw … elube.html

 Thanks everyone, Ferrule Lube was it now that my memory has been jogged and cleaning up the rod after each use has become a habit after having some sections stick together…Thanks again folks…

Luricant? Is that like a chemical that’s attractive to the fish to “lure” them in.

Hello Lotech,

Mike Brooks told me how to tighten up a loose ferrule and it was pretty simple. Lightly…key word here…crimp the female ferrule by placing it in a drill chuck and tightening just a little bit. It doesn’t take much and I’d think ‘sneaking up’ on it would be the way to go. Fish on Joe !

Cheers,
