? Line Wt of a Diamondback Classic Trout DGS-700 Graphite

Can anyone tell me what the line wt is supposed to be for a rod? The only thing on the 4pc rod itself says Diamondback Classic Trout DGS700 Graphite. It is 7’ - 11 & 1/4" when assembled and at each joining section it is 1/4" from closing the gap of the section to section joint. That’s as far as each section will join.

Any help would be appreciated.

Golly, Gem … Diamondback doesn’t list anything in that length in the Classic Trout line. Closest in a 4 piece is an 8’ 3" 4 piece in a 5 weight. Closest in length is a 7’ 9" 3 piece 3 weight.

Are there ANY other marks on it?

Nope Betty, Thanks for trying to research, but I couldn’t find anything with that model number sequence either. And…what I typed is exackery all that is on the rod.

Thanks for trying. I can do the trial and error bit…experimenting with different lines…but was hoping someone would be familiar with them.

Gemrod,

Rod ratings are usually determined by the manufacture by having their experts cast them with different line weights and making a determination as to which one loads and casts best with the rod. Since no one can come up with that information for your rod and you probably don’t have enough appropriate line sizes to run the whole gammet, you could come close by using Bill Hanneman’s common cents method. This will give you a static value for rod strength called the ERN. Then going into either his database or to the one on sextloops.com on the tackle forum, you can find the manufacturers rating on similar rods. This will usually get you within a couple of line sizes to what you would like best. Google Common Cents or Bill Hanneman to get the procedure. It has also been discussed many times on this forum. There is also a procedure on my website www.hatofmichigan.org - Mechanics of Flycasting 1-5 with a number of examples but my stuff is a little more geeky than Bill’s and there is not a good data base like his.

You could call them and ask them.

Lotech…what a novel idea? duh…didn’t even think of that. Thanks and thanks for providing the info to do so. I am going through all the rods I bought last year…taking inventory. Have some that have no markings at all on them.

Bob,
Thanks for your info as well. I am familiar with the CCS system. I have not performed it yet…but plan on a bench for it and a wall someday. I subscribe to RM and go to their website every once in awhile. I did not know about sexyloops having such info nor your website. Thanks mucho for your info.

I am going to have to use the ccs when it comes to some of my other rods. Just due to circumstances my life has been chaotic for a couple of years. I am so disorganized now it isn’t even funny. Now trying to get my arms around things and get settled down and squared away. May even be able to make room for that bench and some wall space in my container.

Thanks loads all of you.

Jim,

“when assembled and at each joining section it is 1/4” from closing the gap of the section to section joint. That’s as far as each section will join."

I cannot help you with what weight rod you have, but, the question on the sections not seating all the way is because that rod has spigot ferrules and that is just the way they look. There was quite a disscussion on spigot ferrules about a week ago. They do look like they are not seated all the way but they are. TFO rods in the multi piece rods are the same way.

Thanks Warren. It just seems so odd to fish with a rod with those gaps in it. But I know…because you say it…it has to be true. That settles that for me.

I called the number above and the cust svc rep didn’t know my answers. Said I need to tallk to “Tom” in rod repair. Tom has never called me back.

Did a google and went to a website. They e-mailed to me to call a different to the one above…THIS other number is always busy. Like it is just plain off hook. I know I can test myself but I am not close to water and don’t have decent turf near me. Bought the rod off FAOL so figured someone would just tell me what it is. I’ll find out sooner or later. I would end up putting a line of my choice on it anyway.
